Teaching Chinese in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

My girlfriend, who is a Chinese national, will be moving from China to Chiang Mai in the next few months. She would like to teach Chinese here. Anyone know of schools or private tutoring options available in CM?

She is university educated with a degree in law. She speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.

She would also consider other types of employment relevant to her background and skills.

Confuscion center at Language Institute CMU used to teach Chinese.

Have her hit the local schools, there is a need and market for Chinese classes but most of those that I know are young Chinese college students from Kunming making less than 8k a month.

Most of the large schools I know have some Chinese teachers at their school. They usually earn around 15-20k per month.

That's in Isaan not Chiang Mai but I'd assume it'd be the same thing there.

So just get her to ask around at the local schools.

Only difference though, is that all of the Chinese teachers I know, have usually either studied at a Thai university (Either majors in Thai, International Business or Education), thus can speak both Thai and Chinese, or studied teaching Chinese as a foreign language at university in China. So the Thai schools might see the other teachers as more qualified for teaching.

Also there are businesses which seek Chinese nationals. However I think they do want Chinese nationals who can also speak Thai. E.g. 1 of my school's Chinese teachers got a new job in Chiang Mai/Rai (I forget) earlier this year working for a Chinese firm. He had a degree in international business from a Thai university though.

Try college or university which has Chinese language as major subject, yes, such as CMU. But salary may not be over 25k. In bkk, some people I know get about 17k per month. Extra class may be paid at the price of 300b per hour.
