BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthipan has been tipped as Pheu Thai party’s most favoured candidate to contest Bangkok gubernatorial election, according to an informed party source.

The source said that former Pheu Thai MPs for Bangkok favoured Mr Chatchart as their candidate because he is most appropriate, has good public image, acceptable to all political groupings and is regarded as a new-generation politician.

The party’s secretary-general Mr Bhumtham Wechayachai said today that the party was still waiting for a ruling from the Appeals Court to confirm the yellow-carding of Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra by the Election Commission.

Once it is confirmed that there will be an election for the city governor, he said the party’s election committee would start screening the potential candidates who could be Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, secretary-general of the Office of Narcotics Control Board, who contested the last Bangkok governor’s election but lost to Sukhumbhand, or somebody else.

Mr Pairoj Issaraseripong, a Pheu Thai candidate for Bangkok, said he found Mr Chatchart most appropriate to run against Sukhumbhand and he would nominate the latter when it is confirmed there will be an election.

BMA governor contest not on my mind: Chadchart
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Caretaker Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt announced Friday that the idea of running for the position of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration governor had never crossed his mind, Chadchart posted a message on his LINE group to inform reporters that no one had approached him to contest the position either.

The Election Commission has decided to cancel the result of last year's gubernatorial poll on the grounds that the winner, ML Sukhumbhand Paribatra, was assisted by election campaigns that framed his main Pheu Thai Party opponent. The EC has decided to call a new election but the decision has yet to be approved by the Appeals Court.

Chadchart said it would be difficult to run the BMA with efficiency because the city administration is responsible for everything from education, public health to tidiness and hygiene.

He noted that while he is popular on the social networks, that was no indication that he could win the election for Bangkok governor.

"Being popular doesn't mean that I would be able to run the BMA well or that people would elect me as the BMA governor," Chadchart posted.

He is not stupid to contest in an area where the majority are yellow supporters.

If what Thaksin said will come true, (there will be new elections and PTP will come out with the majority), he has every chance to keep a good position in the new government.
