Thailand asks Indonesia to open its waters

BANGKOK, March 26 – The Thai Foreign Ministry has requested related government agencies to clarify the incident in which two Indonesian navy personnel were killed by the crew of a Thai fishing boat, a senior official said today.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said he has asked for details of the case from the Marine Police Command and other agencies including the Royal Thai Navy and the Marine Department.

He called on Thai operators to abide by the law in fishing in internatioal waters.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has sent a letter to the Indonesian government, expressing sympathy over the incident, he said, adding that he would telephone his Indonesian counterpart to explain the situation and coordinate for the opening of Indonesian waters.

Some 500 Thai trawlers have been kept ashore after Indonesia closed its waters in response to the March 9 fatalities.

Mr Surapong said he was confident that the case would not affect Thailand’s relationship with Indonesia.

Provincial Police Region 9 Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Chawalit Sawaengpuet, who heads the investigation team, said the trawler and crew involved in the incident left Thailand without going through the required immigration check.

He said the police were investigating to confirm that the fishing boat may have illegally used the rights of boat named Sor Nattaya 7 to enter Indonesian waters for fishing.

The non-Thai crew would be charged with illegal entry, he said.

Praporn Ek-uru, president of Songkhla Fishing Association, said the Fishing Association of Thailand was asked to coordinate in offering assistance to families of the two Indonesian navy personnel and to cooperation in investigating the case. (MCOT online news)

Indonesia should open its waters to Thai vessels, It's a given fact that all fish in the Gulf swam to the Indonesian archipelago.

Just who was this non Thai crew ,nothing mentioned of their nationality, Indonesia will not take too kindly to this sort of behaviour , regardless who they are , I can see some Thai boats getting blown out of the water, too up- set Indonesia is a bad move , they are ten red shirts rolled in one and one thing is for sure they wont take any Bullsh!!t from Thailand.

I guess the caretaker foreign minister does not consider 500 boats and crews being banned from the area around Indonesia as Thai, Indonesian, relationship.I wonder who dresses, packs this boys lunch and ensures he gets to the office each day?

They are not Thai, you need to communicate with the Indos in Indonesian. That the Indonesian government allow 500 Thai boats to fish their waters amazes me.

I they think that saying someone has let their boat be used for something illegal without being very hard to identify these politicians are as stupid as think everyone else is. Blaming someone else is not going to wash with people from "other countries" does not work with other countries. Again Thai ways do not work with other countries. I note they did not mention the usual suspects when pointing at another country in this case.

Why would Thailand ask another country to do something? Anywhere outside of Thailand isn't recognised as being legit.

Too bad the Indonesians didn't capture them in Indonesian water. They must have a lot of information about Thai illegal shipping workers. If Thais told them to kill anyone they encounter, it will be a nice incident for the Thais, ordering the assassination of two Indonesian navy officers.

Thau fish are too small to swim that far.

It is about time the Thai fishing industry looked to the future and brought in some regulations to control the mesh size of nets, escape openings in nets for Turtles, Dolphins etc. and catch limits on endangered species. I hope indonesia doesn't open their waters otherwise in no time there will be litttle fish left and where will fisherman go then.

Australia had a problem with Indonesian boats illegally fishing in its waters. They fixed the problem ....Patrol Boats arrested these boats, towed them to Australia. Jailed the Captains and crews and burnt the boats. The Chileans tried to fish Australian waters for Patagonian Toothfish and were detected. An Australian Warship was dispatched and finally caught a large Trawler which had fled towards Africa. It was towed back to Fremantle (Western Australia), the catch was sold and the Trawler was confiscated and sold...

So the Thai police reckon this boat slipped away without being processed by Immigration and they say the crew was a bunch of foreigners.

But if it wasn't inspected by immigration, how do they know the crew.... oh, never mind.

simple..no arrests,,then no thais ever fish in indonesian waters...thais think that they are above every one..

they need to wake up..
