See above explanation. It's all about perceptions. From the monk's perspective, the people were engaged in wrongful act, dismantling the PDRC loudspeakers and stage. From the people's perspective, the monk was giving tacit support for the PDRC. Both sides made errors in judgement. Both sides must take responsibility for their actions. The accused have voluntarily surrendered to the police, and are taking responsibility for the assault. And now it is up to the monk to give an explanation of what he said and did. If he is a monk, he must speak the truth and that should make for an interesting statement. If his abbot is running a tight ship, he will expect an honest explanation. Better yet, all involved parties should be sitting before the abbot, and in the presence of each other, give their version of events. That way they can see that they both committed wrongs, although an assault is obviously more serious. And at the end of the exercise, there should be apologies made and a request for forgiveness, which should be granted from each party. Each party should understand that the event was not acceptable, but the monk is held to a higher level of accountability, no matter how wrong the behaviour of the people. A monk is supposed to stay above the fray and not allow himself to enter into a confrontation like this.

Did you even stop to read the article? The monk berated the red shirts because they were beating up another man and he told them to stop. Seems buddhist to me, though I'm not an expert. If you were being beaten, or robbed, wouldn't you want someone to tell the people to stop beating/robbing you, or do you think passerby's should encourage the violence? I realize that the Red Shirts believe that the monk shouldn't have told them to stop - and probably told them they were acting badly and not like good people.

They were at the scene, as it can be seen on the videos, but they were only interested in searching the bag of the monk.

The police failed to stop the lynching, and they failed to provide the monk with protection or evacuation to a safe place. After a group of kind people provided protection to the monk, it was necessary to call the Royal Thai Army to intervene, because the Red Shirt mob was waiting for the opportunity to keep on their barbarian beating, and it was the unarmed soldiers who escorted the monk back to his monastery.
