Labor Min hopeful of Thailand’s better ranking on human trafficking

BANGKOK, 27 March 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Labor is satisfied with the latest meeting with various agencies to evaluate the problem of human trafficking and illegal labor, setting high hopes that Thailand’s ranking on the US Priority Watch List (PWL) will improve.

Permanent Secretary for Labor Jirasak Sukhonthachart said the ministry held a meeting today on the topic of human trafficking with Thai Ambassador to the US Wichawat Issarapakdee and executives of Holland & Knight, a company providing reports on the Thai human trafficking situation to the US. The meeting was also attended by such relevant agencies as the Commerce Ministry, the Fisheries Department, the Marine Police Division and NGOs.

The participating agencies presented reports on progress in their efforts to tackle human trafficking, child labor, forced labor and alien labor in the industries they were supervising or dealing with. Representatives of the Labor Ministry, on this occasion, proposed measures for preventing the employment of illegal labor and taking care of those victimized by the practice.

After hearing the briefings, the Thai Ambassador to the US was reportedly content with the overall progress made so far, citing that the agencies involved seemed to have concrete operational plans in place and had been collaborating efficiently with one another. On that note, he was optimistic that Thailand’s standing on the PWL on human trafficking would be maintained at 2.5, instead of being lowered to 3.

Meanwhile, Richard Gold from Holland & Knight said Thailand’s efforts to eliminate human trafficking were currently evident in both the public and private sectors. However, he wished for more cooperation from small enterprises, industrial plants located in border areas and operators in the fishing industry. He added that the US Congress would be informed of the progress in Thailand accordingly.

Just like every plan this Gov makes as well as their promises. They are just empty words. Their plans might sound good but in long run corruption will prevent the officials from doing anything.

I am sure some arrests will be made for show but the majority of illegal workers and human trafficking will continue when money is paid

He said that "agencies have 'concrete' plans in place," he said. How about Thailand's "concrete" plans? Has anyone looked at what specifically Thailand is doing to eliminate human trafficking for sex and labor? Have these NGOs and agencies involved been digging deep into the Thailand sleaze and networked illegal activity. How is it that we never read about any Thai Mr. Bigs being hauled off in handcuffs. The only news in the last two years was the army/navy co-conspiring with the Thai plantation owner in the south and the Reuters story on the Thai labor camps on islands. What do the phony paid off NGOs have to say about this activity for starters?

The extreme suffering of the many souls who are trapped in trafficking / slavery, are a Crime Against Humanity and a source of great shame to all decent human beings. Cosmetic solutions, temporary band-aids and dithering about are simply unacceptable. This is a situation that demands a hard and relentless response - and right now. We as a species can not allow our fellow human beings to become disposable merchandise, it lowers the value of all human lives including ourselves and our children, who would never forgive us if we allowed this evil process to continue.

This crops up every now and again , we seem to be doing something ,But in fact , we are doing nothing at all, this is the mainstay motto of the PTP and their administration departments , either that or a troll lives at the Labour Ministry. coffee1.gif

Holland and Knight is a professional law firm with 0ver 1,000 lawyers not a "company providing reports," and Rich Gold is one of their Washington DC lawyers with a lobbying background. The Thais have probably hired this Holland and Knight law firm and Gold to lobby congress on behalf of Thailand's pathetic human trafficking case. Let's get the facts straight here whoever is responsible for writing this article in a manner to conceal the truth about Thai lobbying and Holland and Knight.

Thailand seems very content with the status quo and is only worried the number might drop. This government should be trying to improve it standing as the status quo is abysmal. Thailand has had such a low standing for so long they have become blaze'. The Labor Department meeting was all about window dressing and face-saving and not how to improve things.

Is it part of the "concrete plans" that the Thai Navy is suing Reuters and 2 reporters of Phuketwan because they both published reports about the involvement of Navy personnel in human trafficking ?
