Driving thai registered car from Isaan to Laos via chong mek

Featured Replies

Hi there,

The gf and I were thinking of driving her thai registered car across the border at Chong mek to take a look around Pakse area of Laos.

Are there any issues with us doing that at the border? Do they check registration details or anything?

I know we should probably ring the insurance company to check what the situation is if there is an accident with a Laos driver.

many thanks

i am fairly sure there is some prior to journey extra paper work to do this but not sure what i expect you will get more info from others soon from more well informed have a good trip enjoy

mmmmmmm best of luck on that one seems awfuly complicated

No kidding. Seems the moral to that story is don't take your car to Laos.

Well, a good link that answers all question the OP had. But you should consider that Thai people are not used to drive on the right lane, the steering wheel on the right side doesn't make it easier.

I went back to my country four years ago, my brother sat next to me ( he's got a driving school, also pedals on his side) when I approached a roundabout.

I really set my turn signal and wanted to drive left, as I'm so used to drive on the left lane now, when my brother mumbled something.

Wow, he was right. Be aware.-w00t.gif

Just a reminder;

I don't know what kind of visa you have to live in Thailand, but you might need a re-entry permit to reenter Thailand. Sure would hate to see them cancel your current visa upon your return and your meeting with that friendly immigration officer at the border.

How did the OP get on?

It would be nice to have an up to date report of the ease or difficulty of doing this at Chong Mek.
