I see quite a few of these shops selling muffler extensions? I assume they are. Not talking about chrome tips, but like the attached small one, do they serve any purpose besides modifying the sound of the car / truck?

The only purpose is if your existing exhaust doesn't clear the car/ bumper and flow out is blocked. 99.9% of cars don't have this problem so , no.

The more joins, changes of size you have in an exhaust the worse the flow and resulting power,

It looks to me as they are for people who want their exhaust /engine to look bigger than it is.

Maybe boy racers have woken up to the fact that too large exhausts just cause turbulent flow and reduce power and flow ,but still want the look.

Edit: I believe the input pipe is usually smaller than the output.

They do nothing, but I think they remove any in-line silencer and shove these on the end for a trendy sound. Only a dino test will reveal if an improvement or not.

Thanks for the reply, i am guessing in most cases the factory pipe clears the bumper etc so they must be for show or sound?

Any forum guys have these on their rides?

mine is cut before the diff with muffler removed. I have no need for flashy fart cannons.

Sound mean? No negative effects regarding back pressure etc?
