Purchasing Donepezil (Aricept) in Thailand or through the Internet

Featured Replies

An elderly relative is now living with me in Thailand. I have found sources for purchasing most of his UK prescription medicines here. However, the only source I've found for Donepezil is Chiang Mai Ram and a months supply will cost 24,000 THB.

Is there a generic version available in Thailand? If yes, where can I buy in Chiang Mai?

I've already tried the CMU pharmacy along Suthep Road.

If not, can anyone recommend an internet retailer?

Does anyone have opinions about this drug or its efficacy?

It is available in Thailand under several brand names, the locally made (and hence least expensive) one is called "Tonizep 5".

However it requires a prescription from a doctor. The oprivate hospitals like Ram often carry only the imported brands and have a considerable mark-up as well.

Could try a specialist at Sripat, CMU may carry the local brand (their pharmacy won't have it for outpatient sale, but their hospital pharmacy may).

As to effectiveness -- some articles below. Basically it does seem to help slow down the progression of dementia in some people (40 - 70% so say roughly half) but even in these will not totally stop it. As the person's condition worsens there will come a point where it is no longer of any use but in earlier stages, its use may help defer that time.

Hi Sheryl,

Thanks for your great advice.

I have managed to purchase 10mg Aricept (made in Japan) from Dara Pharmacy, Kaewnawarat Road, Chiang Mai. I paid 3,900 for 28 10mg tablets.
