NACC expects to rule on PM’s rice pledging case on May 8 or May 13

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to rule on the rice pledging scheme case against caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on May 8 or May 13, said NACC secretary-general Sansern Poljiak on Tuesday.

He said that officials were wrapping up the case to be submitted to the enquiry panel on May 6 and if the panel found that there was sufficient ground to prove the prime minister’s wrongdoings then it would submit the case together with its recommendations to the commission for finalization either on May 8 or May 13.

The NACC, said Mr Sansern, has rejected Ms Yingluck’s legal advisors’ request for an addition of seven witnesses to testify to the NACC in defence of the prime minister because none of these witnesses were relevant with the accusations under investigation.

The NACC also turned down a suggestion of the government that it dispatched officials to conduct field investigation regarding the two million tonnes of rice reported to have gone missing on the ground that the missing rice had nothing to do with the issues under investigation.

Thank goodness the NACC is finally finding a close to this after the endless delays, obfuscation, intimidation, and intimations from Yingluck, Pheu Thai, Chalerm, CAPO, the UDD and all their assorted UDD leaders. The NACC has exercised immense patience, as they have withstood an unprecedented level of pressure. They deserve our respect. And their ruling - as a constitutional empowered agency - should in turn be respected.

In which democracy can a government spend 30 billion USD without transparency? Only thing we know is that they still owe the farmers around 3 billion USD. This is most probably the largest corruption case in Thai history. The fact that Yingluck hasn't released any figures since her party implemented this scheme 3 years ago proves that they have something to hide.

Verdict to be delivered soon for PM's cases

BANGKOK, 30 April 2014 (NNT) - Lawyers defending Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in a corruption trial under review by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) expect that a verdict on the case will be delivered some time during the next two weeks.

The NACC, which is probing Ms Yingluck’s alleged corruption in the state rice-pledging scheme, made the decision to not allow any more witnesses in the case. The premier originally requested that up to 11 people testify on her behalf.

According to her legal team, the agency’s decision signals the end of the hearing and witness testimony process. The NACC is expected to hand down a ruling on May 8 or 15.

Prime Minister Yingluck and other witnesses are also required to be present at another hearing on her transfer of the returning National Security Council head on May 6.

Newly reinstated NSC chief Thawil Pleansri said that he had submitted his statement on the case to the Constitutional Court and would appear at the court on the scheduled date.

He further said that he was not concerned by the prospect of working with the current government and would perform his duty to the best of his ability for the benefit of the nation, and that he was set to focus his attention on security policies in the southern border provinces first.

How about the Abhisit/Suthep Democrat administration government spending 2007-2010; was it anymore transparent? The PTP administration is operating with the same legislative transparaency requirements of the Democrat administration, which is to say with minimal requirements. I'd like to hear about Constitutional reform from the parties to make ANY government budgetary funding and expenditures more accountable, as well as investigations and deliberations by ALL the independent agencies.

I believe you're mistaken, the Democrat-led coalition government didn't take over until December-2008, and ran until July-2011.

"Government spending 2007-2010" included three other administrations.
