They load teachers with so many additional duties that they work 10 to 12 hours a day. Teaching classes with 40 to 50 students is just stupid how do they learn anything. Get some of the non teaching jobs to administration. Teachers still have to hand score test. Living the dark ages Let the teacher teach not to kiss the administration ass to get things done. Pay them what they are worth.

Yes, indeed, why hasn't Thaksin addressed this issue with any of the Govt's he's had in place for the past 10+ years? You always complain about "the establishment" doing nothing, well come on, Thaksin's the one that's been running the Govt the longest over the past 10+ years so if there is a failing here (or anywhere else) it's on his watch.

Hahahaha.

Dodgy schools are on the PTP watch?

I think you may find that school teachers leaders are firmly pro establishment and largely completely anti Thaksin.

let the farang, with already a legit long stay visa, do some volunteer teaching without compensation, and without all the hasstle...

what could be the problem ?

I sincerely hope this was a sarcastic/rhetorical question but, just in case.....

1) To be an effective teacher takes a LOT of training

2) It takes dedication

3) It takes passion

4) It takes knowledge and understanding of how language works

5) It takes ongoing professional development because research and knowledge are continually evolving

6) It takes being able to build effective relationships with parents

It is not simply a matter of...."If you can speak it, you can teach it"

At last, somebody that realizes that backpacker teachers do more harm than good.

This post should be off topic , it crops up so many times over the years that it is just a load of BullS!!t They haven't a clue , but loads of money would help in attracting professionals , nobody in their right mind would come to Thailand to teach when you can get fifteen grand a month, in Japan or HK, like , native English teachers are an means to an end. bah.gif

Let's face it. There is no long term planning which can implemented when there is constant reshuffling of ministers (no matter who is PM). The amount spent on education in Thailand is, surprisingly, not small.

When Prof. Dr. Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech started as Minister of Education he published a policy statement on 25 January 2012 which started with a philosophy"

"Police Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra has said about

education that “Education will lead to the building of people’s vigour.

Vigorous and knowledgeable people are powerful capital to fight

with poverty.” “Emphases must be on distribution of benefits with equity,

and on regards of people with difficulties, in order to provide quality

education for everyone.” “Education is an important key, a starting

element that is necessary in making poverty become past.”

The Pheu Thai Party Government shall take care of Thai people as

family members and not hurt them nor misapply their money. On education,

student-centred approach is committed. People’s children will be taken

care as ours, and teachers as our relatives.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education must look after people, no

corruption, no cheating on students, no forcing on teachers and students to

welcome executives if not necessary, no drugs distributed among our children.

We must relax rules and regulations and other tasks outside teachinglearning.

We must get rid of money charges for post transfers or returns to

home towns of teachers. Criteria in assessment of teachers must be clear,

decreasing judgement. We must also decrease those debt tempting factors.

In education development, the Pheu Thai Party Government

emphasizes the philosophy of EQUITY and TECHNOLOGY application.

We will provide quality basic education for every youth in every area and

creating higher education students as professionals."

There's actually 6 pages (you, of course, deliberately cherrypicking the Thaksin references) detailing the breakdown of the PTP Educational Policy but it ended with this

I would like to see Thailand governed with real democracy of people, by people and for people, one man one vote, making most people released from poverty and Thailand will be really progressive, prosperous and well-being.

Of course that was in the heady of days of early 2012 before suthep and his goons come along, trying to throw that all up in the air.

So, still no real answers from anyone on how Thaksin has improved education in Thailand over the past 10+ years?

Four education ministers before Suthep & Co. took to the streets. That doesn't aspire much confidence in the importance the government places on education.

Moreover, schools of different regions should have a different syllabus to reflect the local identity and values.

I can't agree with this, though I think it's done to some degree already. What this could result in, is a lack of the same opportunities afforded to children in larger cities. Rural kids should be given the same opportunities - to study advanced physics, computer science, mathematics, etc. There are plenty of smart rural kids but they end up nowhere as the quality of the resources is so low. Good teachers need to be given incentives to work in rural communities - 'remote pay', subsidized housing, extra paid holidays, paid travel expenses, etc. much the same as is done in Australia to attract teachers to rural and remote locations. The number of schools needs to be doubled, and class sizes halved.

Cherry picking means selecting the best part, or the part deemed best.

I wrote that the edu policy started with what I quoted and so it does. Of course if you think to start with the begin which has a philosophy statement upon which the Education Policy is build, is just plain cherry picking ... ...
