School opening date fixed on May 16 despite protests

BANGKOK, 14 May 2014 (NNT) – The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) maintains the starting date of the new school term on May 16, believing schools located in protest areas will have proper security measures in place.

Deputy Secretary-General of OBEC Kamol Rodklai indicated that a number of schools in Bangkok were due to begin the first semester of the 2014 academic year this May 16 in the midst of political rallies. Nonetheless, he said the opening date would be kept unchanged as none of the schools had requested postponement so far.

Mr Kamol expressed confidence that many schools under the supervision of the Secondary Educational Service Area Office 1, such as Satriwitthaya School and Rajavinit Mathayom School, already had experience conducting classes in a protest situation. Therefore, he expected no major problems during the upcoming semester.

The Deputy Secretary-General admitted possible inconvenience in the students’ commute to school, and although the protests had been peaceful to date, he emphasized that school officials must ensure utmost safety for their students. The overall situation will be assessed again after the school opening.

PDRC will pressure the EC to put off the election

aekanat-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The People’s Democratic Reform Committee will put pressure on the Election Commission to put off the election earlier scheduled to take place on July 20 until there is a national reform.

Reliable sources said that the PDRC would also try to pressure acting prime minister caretaker Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan to resign as he is unable to take charge of national administration because of his acting capacity.

The PDRC core members held a discussion today (Wednesday) on what course of action the PDRC would move should the Senate decide to pick an interim prime minister under Article 7 of the Constitution or to drop the idea.

PDRC spokesman Aekanat Promphan said the PDRC would wait until Friday when there is a clearer picture from the Senate and to decide its next move.

He denied as a frameup accusation a claim by the Department of Special Investigation that bombs had been found at the Lumpini park where the PDRC supporters camped out for about two months.

Aekanat said that the search of the park by police and DSI officials was done without the presence of any PDRC representatives to witness the procedure. Also, he said that throughout the two-month rally at the park, it was the protesters and the guards who were the victims of grenade attacks and shootings.
