Thai tourists warned against robbery in Switzerland

BANGKOK, 16 May 2014 (NNT) -- Mr. Sumate Mahosot, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, said that the Bureau of Coordination for International Cooperation, Ministry of Labour, said there has been a growing number of Thai tourists who were robbed in Switzerland’s tourist destinations such as Geneva, Bern, Lucerne, Interlaken and Zurich.

The robbery usually occurs at train stations or on trains while traveling, but also in hotels especially in dining rooms where tourists often leave their handbags unattended.

Tourists are quite often pickpocketed while visiting scenic attractions or enjoying taking photographs. Sometimes it's just carelessness on the part of the Thai tourists that causes them to lose possessions, credit cards, important documents, passports and identification cards.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour said that Thai tourists are likely to be robbed during Thailand's long holiday periods when a lot of tourists travel to Switzerland.

A government spokesman there, explained that most tourists are robbed by professional foreign criminals. Meanwhile there are ongoing efforts in Switzerland to solve the problem and arrest the criminals.

I believe they are over charged, and taken advantage of in any way possible, but theft?

Over the years I've known many Thais who wanted to visit Switzerland because of the association with the King but I've never met a Thai who has been there or could afford to go.

Seems there is a crime wave going on there. I know we were victims in Portugal. Purse stolen by a Romanian. Couldn't prove it as he passed it off and I couldn't stay with both, but stayed with one and the police knew him very well. Eventually caught the other (as he was well known), but no purse. Wasn't anything in it anyway! The police told us they were having major problems with immigrants. And were extremely polite to us.

He thought they where making a joke until the girls ran of with his wallet.

He and the many bystanders couldn't believe the shameless robbery in plain sight.

It would take a long time for me to list all the pickpocket attempts and scams I've either been involved with or seen during my travels to the big tourist areas in Europe. We had a guidebook that listed the main scams in Paris. We saw every one and had the "gold ring" scam tried on us. I had the book in my hand, and showed her that section. She just shrugged her shoulders and walked over to her partner in crime who was standing nearby. Didn't faze her one bit.

Yep I was with a tour group gazing at the Coliseum in Rome. Two young girls approached one of the guys in our group and tried to sell him flowers. While he was distracted a young man picked his pocket and immediately handed the wallet to a guy on a Vespa. I was just quick enough to tackle the guy on the Vespa who dropped the wallet and ran.

They were definitely Romanians.

The guy staying next to us had his passport and wallet stolen on the infamous bus route the day before he was due to leave. Not smart, had them in a zip pocket in his cargo pants.

Even with money belts, a traveler I met in Nairobi said his was stolen by 4 guys. 2 came from the front, 2 from the back. The back 2 pinned his arms and the front two went through his pockets and got under his pants and took the belt. They were gone within seconds.

I just had a slight reaction to the Thai's warning ANYONE about travel theft,

FWIW, I left all my things out in my hotels, and with the girl i stayed with, and no one touched a thing,

I was in Rachada City Hotel at one point, not a top accomodation, and then Amaranta Suites, which is top.

same w Chiang Mai, no one disturbed anything, and I used safe's when available
