How do you travel back to Canada? Looking for a good Thai solution

My thai wife finally has a visa to visit Canada. We plan to go back together in July for a 6-8 week period.

I'm used to purchasing tickets from Canada, and of course I can transit through the USA without issue. However for this trip in July its really not convenient to transit throughout the US as we would have to apply for (and probably be denied) a C1 visa for her in the US to transit.

So, I have been searching for flights from BKK to YUL, but I am surprised at the cost of these tickets, typically ranging from 65,000 - 80,000 THB per person. Seems high when I'm typically paying 35,000 - 40,000 THB for a Air Canada flight (with code share partners in SEA). Frankly we'd prefer to keep the money for the holiday and not just the flight.

So, Im wondering if there is a 'special' way, or Thai based websites, or travel agents that specialize in travel to North America, that provides more 'regular' like fares.

Can any members from Canada provide me with some insight as to what the best way they have found to buy well priced tickets from BKK - YUL, any assistance would be appreciated!

Hi Rubba,

And thanks! I did see this option but it's to yyz, so gotta add another 10k per person to yul.

Further is only a 22 day span, we were hoping for twice that!

So you search basic websites, expedia travelocity, etc?

Try jetairways.com: Bangkok, Mumbai, Brussels, Toronto, have a few days rest in Brussels on your way.

Mumbai-Brussels-Toronto is on A330/300 metal.

Or look out for a Qatar promotion, they had a good business class deal last week, pay 1 fly 2.

A friend bought two tickets BRU-BKK for 1450 euro each.

Hi

I fly between the 2 countries usually about 3 times a year .

Play with the flight dates a few days on the departure and return flight .

Expedia is about the best choice . And going to Montreal going through Europe you might want to look at some of those carriers. I have gone to the east coast via Europe

And you can refine you're search also to include Ottawa and other international airports in the area. Ottawa is not far from Montreal

Sounds like you are flexible on Dates so you should be able to get a food price

I can usually get my flights between 38000 to 45000 baht but that is because i search every day on line and am flexible

OP, I don't understand. And, I'm probably ignorant and some things have changed?

A C1 visa is for foreign nationals who are transiting through the US and is good for up to 29 days. LINK I know people who have used them as a way to give a Thai a chance to see the USA, then travel on through Canada and back to Thailand. Of course you need that onward ticket.

But I didn't think that foreign travelers who were simply making connections in the US needed a visa if they didn't leave the secure international part of the airport while waiting for the connecting flight.

Where did I go wrong?

I always travel Cathay. From Vancouver to Bangkok it's $1350 round trip. Toronto is about the same. And you you travel often use the air miles program they have. Buy five tickets and your next is free or can use the points for other things. And it's a direct flight. No USA connection.

Maybe try www.momondo.com. Their search is sometimes coming up with cheap alternatives.

Sadly you went wrong in assuming you don't need a visa for transit. It's is real, and yes you can exit and visit USA for a period, but that is also why it's not easy to obtain for a Thai national who has not had one before.

I have had friends who have (minor) convictions be denied boarding in montreal because they were not eligible to transit through the USA.

I am sure others will confirm that transiting through the USA requires you going through a FULL customs immigration interview, picking up your bags, and rechecking them on the NON secure side of immigration.

USA and china, only two I know of who require you to process through immigration even though you are only in 'transit'

If someone can tell me and prove I'm wrong and she can transit, next round is on me....( yes I know it's a big group..... I'm ready to celebrate if I can about this)

A Thai citizen must obtain a transit visa to arrive to the USA before moving on to another country. But because you have a visa to enter Canada it is simple. Just go and apply at the us embassy. If at the time you don't have the visa for USA , they will not let her on the plane. No refund for ticket.

I've traveled many times now Bangkok to Calgary return with my Thai wife and son. I've booked online and through travel agents. I would go to a travel agent or email one at least and ask them for the cheapest possible flight they can find. Travel agents can get some pretty good deals on decent airlines. The cheapest I ever book was 19,500b incluing tax flying Eva airlines Bangkok to Calgary return through a travel agent. Avoid the states it's a pain in the butt. Lots of choices to choose from without flying through the states. Flying to Montreal will cost more than Calgary of course. My last trip to Calgary was last year and I paid 42,000b. You can always try flying the Europe route to Montreal. Not to sure the price or visas needed for a Thai flying that route.

Transit Visas are 100% for sure required for a Thai transiting through the States. I've learned the hard way.

Yup! Thanks!

Transiting through the USA is a pain even if you have access, like being Canadian.

I use Korean Air from either Chiang Mai or BKK, connect in Seoul, then on to Toronto. Flights during the high season in North America are usually 30 to 40 per cent more than going say in March.

I would avoid transiting through the US so as to avoid the whole Homeland Security Welcoming Committee nightmare.

Having said that, the Cathay flights that I take to Vancouver continue on to NYC JFK. Perhaps you could look at this route and find another flight from New York to Montreal?

Or- if you can find a good price to YYZ, spend a night or two there, and then find land-based transportation to Montreal. Take the train, rent a car, or even the bus. It is only a few hours to Montreal from Toronto.

Have a look at best-travel store.com. They are based in the U S. I have used them many times and usually have good fares. When you make a request there will be a lot of flights on different airlines, pay careful attention to the layovers. The cheaper the flight usually the longer the layover

Slightly off topic but Frankfurt is another airport your'e very likely to have problems even only in transit.

I also use Momomdo to play with dates and routes, and they have useful trend and price graphs as well.

I whittle it down to what I want, then go book directly on the airline website. May be slightly more expensive direct with airline but I like to be their direct customer, not on a ticket through a third party booking site or travel agent somewhere.

If you leave Canada and want to return, you must have:

  • a valid passport or travel document;
  • a valid study permit if you are returning to study in Canada; and
  • a valid temporary resident visa, if you are a citizen of country.I can also suggest to take travel insurance. Thus you get more facility by this.

July is peak period, not many deals to be had. Typically China Air and EVA air are the most reasonable to Vancouver. Philippine Air also has some great prices.

Not for Thai transferring through Germany, but you would need to check country by country what they require. But for German airports, this is what they say on the official websites. Also make sure that the luggage is checked through to you final destination, as otherwise you will HAVE to go through immigration to get your luggage and re-check and THAT can not be done without Visa

Transit Visa Country List

Nationals of the following countries are required to be in possession of an airport transit visa when passing through the international transit area of airports in Germany:

AFGHANISTAN, BANGLADESH, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, GHANA, INDIA, IRAN, IRAQ, JORDAN ** (please see below), LEBANON, MYANMAR, MALI, NIGERIA, PAKISTAN, SOMALIA, SRI LANKA, SUDAN, SOUTH SUDAN, SYRIA, TURKEY

add to the above just for reasons of completeness: IF your flight schedule would be i.e. BKK - Frankfurt => Paris => Montreal, it would mean that you NEED a Schengen Visa, since your flight Frankfurt => Paris would be a Schengen internal Flight.

So the "no-Schengen-Visa" only applies, if your connecting flight out of Frankfurt does NOT require you to leave the international part of the airport.

And second add-on: Also other countries require a airport transit Visa, I think it is called Schengen Visa Type A (normal Visa would be type C).

"...going the long way"? Even to an eastern city like Toronto?
