My wife (37 yo) and daughter ( 8 yo) both have expired Thai passports and current US Passports. We live in the US. They are both planning to stay in Thailand for 10 weeks this summer. What are their options for entering and staying in Thailand (legally) for those 10 weeks. TIA for any advice. They will be traveling June 11th.

Too late to get new Thai passports in the USA, but fortunately for them they will be allowed to enter Thailand with their expired Thai passports. Getting new passports in Thailand will take less than a week.

Enter on their expired Thai passports and get new Thai passports once here. Don't show immigration their US passports. They can enter on the expired passports.

OR

Get each a single entry tourist visa on their US passports which will give them 60 days on entry which can be extended for 30 more at immigration for 1900 baht each.

They do have Thai ID and the expired passport. They are mostly worried that Delta won't let them on the plane.

then phone delta and get a written ok. and besides, the american passports gives them the 30 day visa exemption so why wouldnt they?

Enter the details on this web page and you will get this on the results page: "Nationals of Thailand are allowed to enter with expired passports". Delta airlines uses the same IATA Timatic database when checking in passengers. If the check-in person is experienced and unsure, ask for a supervisor to clear it up.

#1 - 30 days is less than 10 weeks, so potential liability on Delta's part

#2 - some lady my wife talked to at the Thai consulate told her that the airline may not let her fly.

I'll call Delta and see what they have to say. As a backup I'll buy refundable tickets out of Thailand within the 30 day window. They are leaving in less than 3 weeks, I am not sure I trust the Thai consulate to return the passport and visa prior to June 11.

#1 the consulate wont need that long to give a visa, #2 delta wont care about less than 10 weeks because they are thai citizens and cant be refused entry. but phone them for confirmation

You evidently skipped over Maetros post that gave you the link to the IATA data base. I advise that you not pay attention to what person at a Thai consulate says because most don't have clue about this subject.

Delta just gave me a nonsense answer, said that she can enter thailand on an expired passport as long as there is "valid replacement documentation", she interpreted that as meaning a valid visa. Needless to say I disagree with that interpretation.

Personally I don't think she will have a problem, but my wife is in near hysterics.

If they use their US passports and enter Thailand on them they fall under immigration rules the same as any foreigner.

They don't need visas because they can enter on an expired passport..

I think my wife has come to the realization that she will be able to fly and enter Thailand without too much problem. I expect that she will undergo additional scrutiny at BKK (I can't spell Suvarnabhumi) but hope the immigration officials aren't too much of a pain.

She may be asked a few questions.

But the most important thing is not let them see the US passport or they might try to stamp her in on it. Which would create big headaches.

I would think an expired passport and a citizen card will be more than enough

Yes, I did miss that, must have been posting when he did.

What Delta also quoted me was the following statement

"- Nationals of Thailand must hold passport replacing documents valid on arrival."

Anyway, we have decided to not to worry about a visa. I'll stress to my wife not to produce the US passport on arrival.

That is about the next line down in the info you get on the website and would only apply if a person did not have a passport.

Los Angelas has a Thai consulate. If they are both Thai citizens ensure their Thai passports are current. If not, renew them. They will not need Visas as they are Thai citizens. If they are not yet US citizens they may have difficulty re-entering the US. Consult with US immigration a month prior to their departure to Thailand to ensure they will be welcomed back and what documents they will need. Ask for a letter confirming the documents required to re-enter the US. If they have current US passports no problem.

If you go to Thailand with them I would recommend a 60 day Thai visitor visa obtained from the Thai consulate in Los Angelas.

How would they return to the US if they used Thai Passports to enter Thailand, They cannot use the Thai Passport to enter the US because there would be no visa in it. Just asking because I am thinking of moving to Thailand with my Thai wife who will have a US passport, plus a valid Thai passport, I know she could enter on Thai passport, but I don't think she could make a trip back to the US without an Immigration stamp in her US passport. Any help here, thank you

It takes as much as 2 months to get a new Thai passport.

They can enter on their Thai passports and get new ones while here to leave on.

The have US passports.

US immigration does not look for stamps showing entry or departure for another country.

If asked about it just show the Thai passport. The US has no laws that forbids dual nationality.

Why would someone let their home passport lapse? You can get a Certificate of travel from the Thai embassy which is valid for 14 days and allows entry into Thailand for a Thai citizen without a passport.

We did this for our son when he was first born because the full passport would take too long to arrive.

To get a new passport requires a trip to a Thai embassy or official consulate. In many countries that can be a long and costly trip.

Since a Thai can enter on an expired passport it is much easier to do it here and it only takes about a week to get verses up to 2 months.

Yes but before the airline will let you fly an emergency travel document issued by the Thai embassy will be accepted.

Thai's can travel to and enter Thailand on an expired passport. A emergency travel document is not needed.

There have been people do it on passports that have been expired for years.
