two of the 3 usb ports on my lovely little asus netbook running windows 7 ultimate have died but its still working ok :)

so ive bought another secondhand one to use while its being repaired but its running windows 8 which ive never used and my problem is fast stone image viewer which is a great free program that i edit my pictures on isnt available for w 8

so whats the best photo editor for w8

or should i jut get someone to put w7 on the w8 machine

and not have the grief of having to learn w8 and another editing program ?

or w8 owners ... are there any really big advantages of learning and keeping the w8 ?

any advice on this would be welcome :)

What makes you think that FastStone isnt available for Win8?

Just download it and install it in the normal way.

Exactly. Not many windows programs are that OS version specific and most older programs will run fine on newer OS versions.

Dont worry about it. Win8 apps are confusing (and mostly pointless) at the best of times, except possibly on a small device with a touchscreen. But who would ever try to do anything practical on such a device?

You might like to look at Classic Shell which can make Win8 function much more like Win7.

I have an 8 inch Win 8.1 tablet, and the apps aren't even worth it on a small screen. Almost every app has a better normal app or website alternative, and I just live with the accidental clicks on the wrong item or tiny print. The email app will not even do pop email accounts. Though I do have the email app set up and Flipboard set up.

The bigger issue is when there are Android and ios versions of the same app, the Win 8 version almost always sucks.

Do you charge e-cig batteries via your netbook by any chance? If so don't do that anymore.

If it's photos you are editing there is not much better than adobe photoshop or lightroom, with topaz and/or nik software plugins, Alien skin exposure 5 is also worthy.

If you ask the mods to move your post to the photography subforum you are likely to get more worthy advice.

Using FastStone tells me you are only doing minor processing of JPG photos. I agree with Rhythmworx with the added thought that those programs would be good if you want to expand your capabilities. It takes time and effort to use them effectively and are quite a bit different than the relatively minor adjustments available in FastStone. I would say they are really aimed at RAW files, not JPG, but they are great for JPGs also.

I would suggest googling phrases like "jpg photo processing programs" and "free jpg photoprograms". See what is out there. Win8 probably has its own photoviewer processor. And here are some free apps you would find by googling Win8 photo processing.

EDIT: I just reviewed my post and tried to open the image and it would not in 5 secs so I gave up. If that happens, I would just suggest the "Win8 photo processing" search again.

If you don't want to break your bank account for a full blown editor by buying PS then a very good PhotoShop replacement and free, is GimpShop.
