I was thinking of getting a new phone as currently I have only my phone from the UK with which I use to Facebook, Whatsapp and Line with. Obviously I don't use it to make calls or texts and as I can only use it over a wifi network it is a little difficult to communicate with people in Thailand. Especially if I'm not on wifi which would only be at home our when I pop into McDonalds and enter that 15 digit number if the receipt. So anyway I was in a Dtac store today and saw done reasonably priced IQ phones. I was in a rush so didn't play around with them however I wanted to find out from anyone who's used them what they're like to use. I believe they're Android based? I have a budget of around 1500-2000 baht and am looking at an entry level phone which I can use to do all the things mentioned above. Can anyone recommend or offer up any user experiences? I'm also looking to get a postpaid tariff now my work permit has come through so any help or advice as to which one to go for would be appreciated. I ask because I saw done prepay tariffs seem to charge for data time as opposed to usage which sounds impractical. Have had a look on YouTube but alt of the reviews are in Thai. Thanks.

Why not just unlock your UK phone (I'm guessing that's why you can't use it with a Thai simcard)

Depending on how much you want to spend there are many capable phones in the 4-7k price range. The one I'm using the Moto G is about 6.5k. Excellent phone.

I just saw your budget ... 1,500-2,000 baht .. are you serious!!!!

Here is an example of an unlock site

I haven't used this particular site so Google some more until your happy.

Asus Zenfone 4? Its only slightly higher than his stated budget (2,990 baht) *and* its dual-SIM. So he can have both his UK and Thai SIM in the same phone?

Thanks for your responses guys. I think I need to up my budget a little to get a decent one. Which actually brings me onto my next question about post pay contracts. In the UK you can usually get a phone free of charge when you sign up for a contract. I don't use the phone for anything other than what anyone else would use it for so was wondering if anyone is using a tariff that they would recommend and if they got a free phone with it. Also in the UK you have to go through a credit check...so what do you need here to get a contract? Thanks in advance.

Nope. No free phones here. Many lowish tariffs ..

Contract : work permit. Proof of address. Passport.

Dtac or True

before you jump into a contract you might want to dip your toes with prepay for the three main carriers... less of a hassle to test out whether the network is good where you live/work/travel.

btw in your original post I think you said something about the prepay data costs not making sense - you're probably talking about the "default" prices, I believe everybody who actually plans on using data on prepay signs up (done directly on the phone) for packages for either time or volume. there's a couple other threads about this here you can take a look at them.
