Let's hope so for the peace, prosperity and good of the country,my daughter is half English and half Thai, her future depends on the outcome of this current crisis, how could I explain to her that she was born into a nation of Thais who killed one another on the streets of the nations capital in the name of democracy.

Well they have rounded up the 'opposition', given them a week to ponder their mistakes and sent them home, without travel documents.

More tellingly, the army has set a precedent here in removing a whole boat load of police officers. I may be wrong but I don't recall the army messing with the police in previous coups, much beyond replacing the high profile chiefs in Bangkok. This has been a wholesale 'slaughter' going as far as to eventually abolish the name Royal Thai Police. In addition, they have dismissed many governors and others from pretty much all the jurisdictions with any significant 'red' leanings. For all this ranting about reform and Thai politics being totally corrupt, I am not too surprised that the army has found absolutely no need to shunt any policemen or governors aside in the great blue south land.

So, with all the bastions of Thaksin support sufficiently swept clean, the army can set a timetable where we can be assured that the Democrats will inherit the earth (again)... up until the first democratic elections (again).

They will combat that risk by giving each peasant half a vote only.

Either that, or, passing an IQ test that includes the questions "Name one colour that is not red" and "can you find your way to the polling station if I don't give you 500 Baht"........

As the PDRC have got their way so far they'll probably also get their way in replacing normal representative democracy with a Grand Fascist Council-style occupational franchise. Just give the right occupations the right number of seats and the Democrats can finally win an election.

I take it from your comments that you would prefer to keep things going with Thaksin at the helm.

Maybe it will be 2 years,as far as i see so far at least they are doing something,ie; farmers getting paid, law and order, corruption being tackled, but i would say the whole Police force needs to be dismissed and then re hired, with a HUGE emphamsis on serving the people and not themselves.

It sounds like a good idea.

I wonder if they have thought of that ?

So Skint, you are confirming what the OP said?

Personally, I would have thought that their rule would have extended into a longer period then that.

The general gave a speech last night on Thai TV, with English sub-titles, in which he explained the reasons for the coup and what his plans for the future were.

14 months at the earliest IF peace and order is acheived. This is enough to keep the masses quiet in the immediate future.

Are you expounding the 'If you are not with us, you MUST be with them' rationale?

The good thing is the Thai electorate have a better handle on this than you.

Accordng to the Aljazeera translation of the address, the army reckons they can do reconciliation in 3 months and rewrite the Constitution over the ensuing 12 months.

To me that indicates a pretty poor handle on the deep social divisions they need to embrace.

I said embrace, not marginalize and ignore.

I'm sure they will take your indications into account - being as they are an expert opinion.

I just hope you're not right but every day and every order it's looking increasingly likely.

Yeah, I don't see how they could disguise their reforms as democracy within that timeframe. Best to give a reasonable timetable now and then keep pushing it out. All in the hope that things go well in the meantime meaning there will be no calls for elections in the future. With opposition voices silenced then how long will it take for the propaganda to work? Looking at how the first week has gone, not long at all.

Actually I think the weirdly named Democrats are as much to blame for current situation than anyone.

I firmly believe that if they put as much effort into making decent all-inclusive policies and electioneering than they did with organising street protests and anti Thaksin rhetoric then they really could have won the last election. (perhaps a coalition government).

Don't forget that many reds were not happy with the PT government. They were there for the taking.

But the Democrats took the lazy option and boycotted elections.

This just gave all the impetus back to PT.

You hit the proverbial nail on the head!

It's all about balance and compromise now. But so far it's very one sided. Maybe that's good for the short term but it still doesn't solve anything.

If they have elections in 14 days or 14 months i don't see what will have changed. The same divisions will still exist. Will the yellow shirts accept the elections ?
