City Hall wants police to handle illegal parking, traffic light problems

PATTAYA:--Pattaya city hall can put up traffic signs and lights, but it’s up to the police to actually enforce them.

That was the message from Pattaya spokespeople Banjong Banthoonprayuk and Damrongkiat Phinitkan during their monthly meeting with reporters May 23. Both were responding to complaints about illegal parking and the decision to turn off pedestrian-crossing lights on Beach Road during weekends.

Chaowalit Jariyayanyong, chief of traffic and commute design, said city hall can design signs and paint traffic lines “but as far as law-enforcement goes, it’s up to police and the (Chonburi) Land Transport Department to manage the regulations.”

Police also are responsible for the much-ridiculed traffic lights at more than a dozen points along Beach Road, he said.

“The lights are working just fine,” Chaowalit said. “But the police have requested they be shut down every Friday through Monday, leaving them blinking to reduce congestion.”

Does anyone here seriously believe that the police would make such a decision to have the lights turned off? giggle.gif More like the Pattaya taxi Mafia if you ask mebah.gif

I would like to tell Khun Chaowalit that with all due respect if you are trying to cross beach road ( particularly at night when its harder to judge the speed of vehicles) from say Royal Garden Plaza shopping centre to the beach side of the road it is extremely difficult to see which vehicles might be travelling ridiculously fast in the beachside lane because your vision is seriously obscured by the endless stream of slow moving baht buses.

I have already seen one elderly foreign lady being knocked over by a motorbike right in front of Royal Garden Plaza shopping centre but luckily there wasn't a fatality on that occasion. But it's only a matter of time

Khun Chaowalit those pedestrian crossing lights need to be on ALL THE TIME for the sake of the safety of tourists to this city !!!!angry.png

What is the point of these expensive pedestrian traffic lights, whether they are on or off? Most drivers ignore them, which means that to an innocent newcomer they could be fatal.
