Well ,Kris,i do trust my doctor,he speaks good English and his wife even better, she help's at the surgery,he is jolly good and is dealing with my tropical ulcer[on the leg- not due to drink],he is actually an army doc,i think he must work at the local army base, but most westerners here go to him,and he has no attitude like western gp's often do,especially if you are not wealthy.

After ten years living here I've found a large number of professionals I can trust and I've tried to communicate this in part by compiling the pinned list of medical professionals in Chiang Mai and by repeatedly recommending my lawyer, Kuhn Sumalee. There are others that I trust and have great confidence in, people from other disciplines, but to try and push or promote names becomes self defeating since most people want to shoot down the notion that any Thai could ever be trusted! For the most part, people have to find their own preferred list, making mistakes along the way, too sad really.

I do not trust anyone irrespective Thai or not.

I especially do not trust any doctor.

I always check on internet and do my own research before accepting doctor's advice.

Yes we place out lives in the hands of the pilots so i guess there is some trust factor there, but given the choice of say pilots, how would you chose which one to trust?

Call me soft, but I like to think that most people will not deliberately set out to do you harm. Of course there are and always will be exceptions. In the main, I like to think that people will help where needed, will do their job professionally and yes, you can rely on them to do it. Regardless of race color, nationality etc.

Its only human nature in some situations, perhaps hospitals, where you can become nervous because of the language barrier and ensuring that you are understood, but again regardless of that, I honestly believe they will take care of you as needed.

So, for me, yes I can trust them to do their jobs when needed.

I do trust. I trust the Dr who saved my life 2 years ago. I trust the Dr who took over my treatment after 10 days in ICU and accepted me into Mission Hospital,Phuket keeping me alive through massive infections and fevers. . I trust my Dr who looks after my kidneys and blood pressure.

I also trust my maebaan who came and visited me every day for 3 months to make sure I was ok. I remember waking up one day to find her sat next to me, holding my hand, with her husband watching the TV with the sound off!!

Nice story. Brought back memories about my time in hospital. Nice reminder.

Kris, send me the phone number of that maid, will you? Mine is lazy and refuses to do any polishing.

As far as doctors are concerned, they're a mixed bag. But I have no choice about them as the only med coverage I have is thru the Thai social security system. That means a designated SS hospital and whatever doctor is rostered on. Many years ago Sukhumvit Hospital was quite good - one doc there even played rugby when he studied in the UK and was one cool old guy. I had trust in the docs there and in Samitivej where my daughter was treated for pneumonia (Dr Piyanat - a wonderful, sweet lady). Currently, I'm at Laem Chabang International Hospital. Most of the docs there have all the appeal of a gum-chewing check out chick, and are just about as communicative. I went there Sun morning to get fluid drained from my knee - from go to whoa, the doc said not one word to me, not even about follow up treatment. I don't have much confidence in them.

While waiting for my next job to come in, I did a google for top professions. Here's askmen's:

Photojournalist

athlete

engineer

military

judge

Sea captain

Pilot

Firefighter

Doctor

Astronaut

Note no "lawyer".

I think I know what you mean, Krisb.

The level of professionalism of an occpuation varies inbetween countries. The difference really becomes clear when the issue is not simply about a car mechanic you don't trust anymore. It becomes more evident when you're going to the hospital because it involves the health of you and your loved ones.

It's a matter of trust and this takes time.

Kris, as we live in this country, and one day you will be doing the same, we have to trust the professionals, otherwise there is no point of living here.

OK, there are many areas that the "Mai Ben Rai" culture applies, but even in 7 years being here, I can see that the attitude started changing.

How can I not trust my doctor?

What alternatives do I have?

How can I not trust the builders that build my house?

Four years latter and I can't see even one crack.

There are many things that upset me, like them never being on time or the way they are driving and a thousand other things.

But, one, has to adjust to the Thai way of living and not the Thais to adjust to the way we used to live.

Costa, are there things that don't upset you in Greece? I know there are plenty of things that upset me in the US.

Some good, some bad, same as everywhere, As long as the good are more than the bad.....

Brother you have the right attitude, That's why you will live to be a Hundred.smile.png

Krisb,

Trust starts with yourself. Once you can achieve that, the world becomes much easier to handle...

Exactly Dal.

Now take our friends at Nok Air as a fine example. They thought long and hard (thumbsup.gif ) about how to give potential customers that safe and sound, trusted feeling, without even leaving the ground.

Next time I fly, I now know I can trust Nok Air.

I trust most people until they give me a reason to not trust, today I was on the road doing short business visits, I spoke to about 35 strange Thai people today and they were all nice. when I take a taxi and ask with a smile if he want to bring me where I need to be, 99% puts on the meter without asking. motorbike taxi's always gave me a correct price. Even most policemen are quite polite when you are nice to them.

Sure you meet the ocasional fool but, I can hardly remember any bad Thai people that I met here, most of them are reasonable turstworthy same as the people in my home country but then, I think most Thais are more laid back, friendly and like a joke.

I've met some sea captains I wouldn't trust to cut my lawn.
