Personally the majority of my time is spent in the downtown central region of bkk. I have walked on foot in the small sois of bkk before but not too late at night something like 9pm and cars and vehicles were around. Walked in makkasan dead at night with foreigners from even poorer countries like africa etc i don't want to go into whether they commit crimes or do drugs etc but if they do just say so. Walked around suk soi 11, soi cowboy and even though those places are seedy i doubt crime takes place there. Everytime i been to pattaya i was with friends and he/her drove there. I was never alone there and i don't take questionable people back to my hotel room but then pattaya is well known to be crime/drug infested so it's pointless asking.

Would just like to know from you guys that live in the outback areas country side like issan or a smaller city say khorat how is it like there. Is it like camden NJ in the US or like detroit? Curious about violent crime over there. Do ppl get shot or stabbed or slashed frequently?

Mine is a smaller city, by 9pm very little traffic, by 11pm it a virtual ghost town

In the Village where I live its 9pm and everyone is asleep, nothing moves til 4 am.

never heard of a fight, or anyone EVER being hurt by anyone else, but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen, I nor the family have just never heard of it happening.

In and around Rhek Thum, murders occur every month. This is a town of 3000, mostly rubber tree workers. They kill each other over face. We'd say they killed each other over a few bowls of stolen rubber sap, but really it's face.

Walking across someone's property got a teen shot dead recently. Then the boy's father went and shot the shooter dead. Banging another guy's wife got two hired shooters on him in a mom and pop shop. There was so much brain and blood, they burned down the shop. A cop was shot dead, in the police station, in front of other cops, by the family of a teen whose motorbike he confiscated.

I doubt any of these (except maybe the cop) got entered into any statistical base, though.

I don't go out after dark. It's like the wild west here, except with face.

I have heard of lots of murders and thefts in villages around, but they don't get publicity. Everybody seems to know all the details, yet no one is interested in publishing anything about them.

In small village of my husband near korat are its mostly internal violence. ..between neighbors or family. ..or drunk fights...not holdups or the like. ..at 9p.m. all r asleep unless there is a wedding or funeral although I suppose at the karaoke shops there might be problem s...and the dogs r definitely a problem at night

One thing I love about Thailand, things are sorted out Thai style, think of it as being like the old west.

I watched as a family were given 10 minutes to pack up their stuff before the house was torched, the locals had had enough of the thieving.

Others more fortunate are told to pack up and head to Bkk, not welcome, disrupting harmony.

Generally i stalk around the edge of my property, until about 10 pm,with my winchester, mumbling, and chewing tobacco,pi**ing every now and again, scanning around the bushes for potential threat's and that's just when i am in Bangkok.

Shows what a greenhorn you are. The threats don't start skulking until way after 10.

I don't know where that is but a google search should fix it. Interesting. They just burn down buildings like that.

Nothing at all. No province, nothing comes up in fact it just shows posts made by you on other topics.

Where is that? Which province?

Nah. Not on Google Maps.

But if you know where Ohm Phit is, Rhek Thum is about 40 clicks farther south, near Sumsak.

I think they burned it because they were afraid of ghosts. And no more customers anyway. I have to say, the place really was a mess. Guy had no head left after about 30 rounds passed through it.

Dude, you are killing me.

so i suppose you won't tell me the province it is located in?

I don't tell folks the real name of the town I live, not over the internet. So I made the name up a couple of years ago.

But the fictional town of Rhek Thum, is indeed in the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

(Try saying the town name as one word, Ultimate.)

Damn this is really weird. At least i have a province.

It's a southern province too couldn't be too north cos of the rubber trees.

Rural Thailand is an awfully big place. So what region are we talking about? = No, the Isaan is not the only place that can be classified as "Rural-Thailand". Far from it.

I live in a rural-area, where even expensive houses are not surrounded by 3 meter high walls, and the dogs are kept as pets and the local police is keeping busy with occasional traffic controls. To settle rare cases of domestic violence is the only thing that breaks the monotony of the lives here of those poor devils.

The alert reader has, at this point, already concluded that it's probably not somewhere in the Isaan. No, it's not. But it is still very much in "Rural-Thailand", believe it or not.

As said, it depends on the region. Beverly Hills is a more desirable place to live than the South Bronx, I dare to say.

Cheers.

I mean any place in thailand that isn't the city obviously. In my op i just gave an example of rural thailand like issan. I know that there are rural areas in the rest of thailand. It doesn't have much city area since the majority of citizens all seem to converge unto bkk.

Are crime rates higher in some regions? Perhaps the border towns/cities with myanmar, cambodia for example have higher crime rates?

only 30 rounds? they must have been shooting a long time, tell them to get one of these , could be done in about a hundredth of a second and have time for somtam after in fact they could have just not bothered going into the shop and stood outside and removed the entire shop

U-dub:

I made the name up because I value privacy, and dislike surprises. The internet is full of nuts. The name reflects the, umm, ambience, of the place I live survive in.

I'm bettin' you're thinking Ohm Phit is a real town, too?

More than one person identified the car that nailed a motor scooter rider, stopped, then backed over the guy to finish the job. No one id'd the car to the cops, though, so the school director still has his job.

No, Ultimate Weapon, the stories aren't made up. Just the name of the town, to protect the guilty from losing face.

Unless presented in the English language press/websites, the vast majority of violence goes unnoticed by foreigners.

In tight knit communities (ie any Thai local community) the local people know about violent incidents, will often know exactly who the perpetrator is but will say nothing about it out of family/friendship connections or simple fear.

The 'Thai way' of fixing problems so loved by some foreigners is the cause of much fear in Thai communities.
