Which processor for home server?

Featured Replies

I’m planning to build a home server for files and streaming media to my TV, I will use Linux as my operating system. But the question I have is not really related to the operating system…

The mainboard I have is a Asus P5K, with 4GB DDR2 800Mhz memory and a cheap graphic card.

For processor I have two options; 1 option is an Intel E4300 and the second option is an Intel E6550. Which processor should I select and why?

The cheapest one because you won't be stressing either.

You'll buy very old cpu for hd playback?

If you have gpu that supports 1080p hardware decoding, then any cpu would do it.

Or, you can buy an intel nuc for cheap at ebay and play any 1080p file you want.

The parts I use are from several of my old computers, it also includes a Seagate 320GB and a 1TB (32mb cache) WD Blue harddrive. I maybe will buy a new case as most new cases have dust filters and better airflow... and cost about bht 1,400 so not a big deal
