What internet can I expect to get in my condo?

Hi all,

I just signed on the dotted line for a condo and move in next week. I wanted to get internet setup and asked the guy what was available. He said True only and that it was 699 for 12mb + TV.

I went through the true website and found this page which seems to match up - http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-sook/entry/1524

Using google translation on the tiny amount of actual text on the page (thanks for putting it all in images true!) it seems that this is a cable product. I decided to see what else might be available and found this page - http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/product-service/product-sook/entry/2525

Now I can't quite tell what the actual deal is but that seems like far better value (30Mbps compared to 12Mbps for just 100 baht more). Now it seems this is some kind of deal given there is a 2,547 baht figure with a line through it. Is this just a limited time offer (say a couple of months before reverting to normal price)?

I found a PDF linked to from this forum that had a brochure of True's services in English, but this package isn't mentioned at all.

So I guess my questions are. When the guy said the internet was 699 is there a chance that was just an example he was giving and I will actually be able to get a better package as 12 just seems a little low. And, if so, can anyone tell me what this other package I found is? If it's not compatible with the line at the condo then I'd at least try to get at least 15Mbps on the first package.

Cheers,

Alex

If we knew where this new condo was located maybe another TV member could advise you, otherwise we are just guessing

I realise not giving my condo does hinder the amount of help people can give. However, I'm a bit reluctant to give out my address on a forum.

It seems that the line into the condo is cable rather than an old fixed line for adsl so any help anyone could give about that package I found with no English translation would be very useful.

A general location like Sukhumvit in BKK, i think would suffice. No one wants you to post your exact location.

not sure what you excatly mean.. if you rented a condo, you buy the internet yourself, not from the landlord? So contact True with copies of your passport, visa, rental agreement then you can choose whatever package you want

Or did i misunderstand something here? :)

I'm trying to figure out what this package i linked to is. Is it just a limited time offer where the price goes up after a few months? Will I get 30Mbps for the life of the contract?

I know I'm buying from true and not the landlord. I was trying to work out what my options were. The True website is majorly lacking in English translation so I thought I'd ask here.

Sorry if it wasn't clear.

Not sure at all about 30Mbps, you'd be lucky to get 10mbps and even less for international

surfing, don't let them fool you with big numbers....

Hi,

Thanks, I've seen the speed issues discussed at great length here and am fully aware of them.

I'm really just keen to know what the deal is with this package. If for only 100 baht a month more I can theoretically (when the sun and moon are in the correct alignment) get twice the speed then I'd be happy to pay for it. But if the deal is that I only pay 100 baht more for the first 6 weeks and then it shoots up to over 2k baht a month then obviously I'm not going to do it.

If anyone can explain to me what the deal is with this 30Mbps package is I'd really appreciate it.

Regards,

Alex

The link you provided says the price is, as you thought, 799/month, reduced from 2547 'normal price'. For that you get 108 True Vision channels plus 3 HD channels (whatever they turn out to be). On the Internet side, you get up to 30Mb speed, but the starred note says that speed is only for cable Internet. You seem to get unlimited 'True Online' Internet, 30Mb/3Mb download/upload, and 'True H' 48Gb maximum data plan for mobile (the starred note says 'details according to conditions' (of contract, presumably).

So if your apartment has cable and you want all those channels and you think 48Gb data for mobile is sufficient per month, this is a good deal. I'd advise finding out what additional data will cost if you exceed the cap, and going through the contract carefully with someone who understands both Thai and Internet before signing up.

I have the maximum True internet package for my apartment, costs 699 Baht per month for 7 MBS.

The maximum speed is limited by the quality of the True cable to the apartment block.

I am unable to subscribe to DTAC or any other internet services provider.

Check with your True office who will be able to tell you what packages are available for your apartment block.

Thanks for the reply.

The impression I got was the 48Gb limit applied to the mobile broadband part of the package, but perhaps it's an all together limit. This could be a problem, back home I was averaging about 120gb a month.

Be interested to know if anyone knows how long this price is reduced from the normal price for.

Cheers

Thanks. I'll try this.

To be honest I judged their English language support based on the lack of English on their website which is why I came here to ask, but maybe I should have tried calling them first.

See my original post, I've amended it.

They do also say that they will provide and install cable free up to 70m, provide a router (not given free though). There's a load of other stuff too, which is why, as I said, I'd go through the contract details carefully.

Ahh, great. Thanks a lot.

I'd be pretty hard pressed to hit 48GB of mobile data a month. My average is about 2 or 3 usually so that's not a problem.

I guess it now comes down to how long the price is reduced for and whether I can get it in my condo.

Will try contacting true and see where I get.

Thanks for the help.

No word on the link as to whether it's a limited offer or not, but with competition and Internet prices coming down worldwide, I'd expect it to continue. Best check directly at the True shop though.

I guess my final question is what's the realistic lead time on getting this installed? This is a pretty new condo block and I'm assuming the line and everything is in place so it should just be turning on the service and installing the modem/router.

Who was "the guy" you asked? Best to go to the condo main office and ask them and then go to the suppliers they mention.

Some condos are restricted to single suppliers, some not, since they dislike too many different cables coming in to shared facilities.

Also some options from suppliers wont be available in certain buildings, especially fibre when coax cable is what has been run.

So first step get 100% clear on suppliers and then speak with the suppliers about your building.

Asking here regarding condo internet is going to get generic possibly wrong answers since you wont name your condo.

The guy was the estate agent. He said only True Online was available and then said I can get package with 12Mbps and TV for 699 per month which is what lead me to the 12Mbps cable package and then onto the 30Mbps cable package.

To be honest I had a feeling that the first question might be hard to answer; however I was particularly interested in the answers to the 2nd question regarding the 30Mbps package I'd found.

I've been on the live chat to true but it seemed to fall down when I couldn't give them an exact address for the condo. Just the name and road it's on. I searched online but couldn't find a "house" number anywhere.

I'll pop down to the condo itself and chat to the people in the management office and see what they can tell me.

Cheers

Well True called back. It took a while for me to get my address across to them but when they looked it up they said ADSL only, up to 9Mbps for 599.

That truly sucks and I really hope they made a mistake. Will try to get in contact with the building management and cross my fingers.

My condo is on there so hopefully True made a mistake.

True called back and confirmed cable is available. But didn't offer the 30Mbps package so I guess that's not available.

Oh well, at least I can get 15Mbps (max)

I am at View Talay 1 near Jontiem, and have 3 services available =

1). True, which it is not at 700 + or 2) AIS which you probably can't buy as no one there understands English ! or my choice, 3). A DTAC air card at 429 a month. Usual cheap service but is fairly dependable and, for me, affordable.

More, extremely limited info, available at Big C Pattaya Klang

Why don't you bypass all of this crud and get yourself a USB aircard. Just put a SIM card in the stick and you are good to go. All the phone services offer deals and plans with them or you can just go prepaid for the internet SIM time and it is cheap. You will be free.

Is it unlimited and what sort of speeds do you expect? My network arrangements are somewhat complicated and I managed to leave my router with a USB port back in the UK so having to use my secondary one which lacks USB (and simultaneous 5ghz and 2.4ghz). So I'd probably have to invest in a new router that can be flashed with dd-wrt or similar. Worthwhile if I'm going to get the same or better bandwidth and data allowance from mobile broadband but not if I don't.

I have True Docsis (cable) in lower Sukhumvit which is on a 14mb plan. Works OK in Thailand, but certainly not fast on overseas. I have had 1.8mbs/sec downloads when downloading torrents, but not regularly. However an important thing is I use VPN when doing torrents to stop get throttled as True are apparently known for this. Before signing up for long term VPN make sure it is immune to the throttling as not all VPN services are the same. I use PIA and that seems to work OK

Reminds me I will have to ask True why our ADSL line has been cut back to 9mbps, we signed up for a 10mbps package and had it for the first year at least.
