BANGKOK: -- The Pollution Control Department says air quality around Bangpoo industrial estate where a plastic manufacturing factory, Bisco, in Samut Prakarn province caught fire and exploded last Friday is normal with no harm to health.

Deputy director general Ms Sunee Piyapan said latest air quality measurement at and near the factory showed it was normal with sulphur dioxide gas density in community areas around the 100-metre perimeter from the factory measured at no more than 0.2 milli grammes/square metre.

Only at the fire scene in the factory where the gas was measured at 0.4 milli grammes.

But the amount was not serious or a threat to health as the gas density is slowly decreasing, thus did not prompt any evacuation of residents although there were still smokes billowing from the gutted factory, she said.

Fire engines are now spraying water to the scene to put out the smokes, she said.

She also said the department has coordinated with the industrial estate authorities to block waterways around the estate from flowing down to other waterways outside the estate, and also required the estate to treat all water from the factory fire before discharging to other waterways or ditches.

She added another team of officials will be inspecting thequality of water in waterways and ditches near the area again to make sure it is not harmful to environment.

those thai factories, they really burn very clean when caught on fire , apparently

Everything is 'normal' in Thailand, the air quality is 'normal', the people are getting sick in a 'normal' way, they even die normally, the only abnormal things might be the profits made by ignoring health and security measures and norms, ...and the size of the brown envelopes delivered to the 'officials' (when did they take their air samples, where, also inside houses and food storages, and... up wind or down wind).
