What's the best way to send belongings from the UK to Thailand?

If all goes to plan I'll be starting a new job in Bangkok in the next couple of months. I will need to send a few bits that I won't take in my luggage, there's not much mostly kids stuff - tricycle, books, clothes, toys, high chair etc. what's the best way to do this? Keeping the cost down is probably more important than it getting there in record time. Thanks.

Personally if it's only a few bits I would buy them again upon arrival, probably be much easier than all the usual hassle involved with shipping personal items here, customs, tax etc.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along to help but that's my tuppence worth.

Pack the things the children will really miss

and leave out others, replacing when you arrive.

Not sure of the latest situation, but with a work permit you used to be able to

import household goods duty free withing 6 months of arrival

Unaccompanied baggage by air, or a container by ship are options.

Talk to your employer about help with customs clearance

You don't say which country you are in at the moment.

If you are in the UK you can Google "UK international removals" and get a long list of companies that will ship household goods to Thailand. They will give free quotes.

The cost is usually based on volume (cubic feet in the UK).

Problem is that you can be faced with unexpected charges at this end. Thai customs do not have a great reputation.

If there is an option for your employer to make all the arrangements and cover all the costs, then go for it. If not, I would advise against it. As others have said, probably cheaper and less hassle to buy new when you get here.

Good luck.

As you are starting a job here, then you will have a work permit. With the work permit you will be eligible for a one time duty and tax free import of personal belongings.

You will just need to choose a removal company or, if it is really not that much, a logistic company who has a reputable partner in Thailand. The process is quite straight forward once the goods arrive they require your passport and work permit. Everything else they will arrange. I have not heard of any issues with customs if you go that route. Just make sure that your belongings will not be packed in any original packing and that they look used.
