noddy77
Do Russians need visas to enter Thailand? I heard they fly into U-Tapao with no need for visas but may be BS. Would not be a first for me.
SteveFong
in the several places I stayed in BKK, I was amazed with what passed as a balcony. At 6 ft tall, the railings did not even reach my hip, but rather the top of my leg. My Thai g/f was always pulling me away from the area, even when I was just looking out. They are also very small. They are really smoking areas, in a chair only, facing out. Never, to stand, facing in. One errant step backwards, and, it is over Edited August 2, 2014 by SteveFong

kerrysum
May she rest in peace. Meanwhile Bangkok must be by far the world's #1 of people dying by falling from high floor balconies. Are the railings there too low perhaps? Or are they a convenient way to "get rid of people, without the BiB doing anything about it"? It would be interesting to see the total numbers for deaths in Thailand by falling from balconies.Seems to be astronomical at this point, seems a daily occurrence. Any reason why? soalbundy
Police said they were looking for her friend to find out the exact cause of the death. Why? Is the friend a medical examiner? I thought it rather a strange statement too. I think the cause of death is pretty damned obvious, I go as far as to say its from impact with the ground from 44floors up that did it... RIP anyways. Too many case like this here. 34 floors up, not 44. From what height is terminal velocity reached? i believe its 120 kmh for a human body.

Are the railings there too low perhaps? Or are they a convenient way to "get rid of people, without the BiB doing anything about it"? " Are the railings there too low perhaps?" An interesting question. Many Thai buildings seem to have kitchen and bathroom counters lower than westerners are used to. Normally they are about waist high. Thais are generally shorter than many farangs, I wonder if this is also the case with the balcony railings? It appears a larger proportion of farangs take a balcony dive than Thais. Perhaps someone with experience in Thai construction standards can clarify. Most of the condos that I've been too (i've look at around 20 condos all over bangkok) actually have railings around the tummy to chest, only those low end cheap condos have railings that are only up to the the waist approximately 90 to 100cm. Standard legal height is around 110cm and up I believe.
oneday
Where did she get the money to come to Thailand. Was she here on a tourist visa? How long was she here on a tourist visas? How did she support herself in Thailand? Was she a prostitute? Those are the bloody simplest questions that any journalist would ask before writing this story. The police aren't going to solve this because the press hasn't the stones to do their job. Write a real story. Do some homework and some legwork. I'm very sorry for you young lady and more than just a bit angry at the quagmire of corruption that is. On the contrary, didn't you notice this phenomenal piece of important information provided by the journalist. I was impressed. "The condo offers daily and monthly rental services." I think they do a bang up job of reporting...don't you? Reading between the lines, it sounds like the police might suspect the roommate was in the room when this young lady fell and are looking for her to "question her more about the incident", because the half smoked cigarette seems to imply someone was there when the girl fell and left right after the incident". Now that's a journalistic statement, which could have been verified by asking the right questions. And the fact there was a "cigarette tray" also found at the scene is quite profound...NOT! Perhaps the journalist was trying to say the half smoked cigarette was found in a cigarette tray. Wow, what a surprise. Do these journalists even have a high school education? RIP. . bushwacker
The Police want to question the room mate to determine why the lady lived on the 34th floor yet died from falling from the 44th floor. This is very hard for the police to understand especially since the cigarette butt was found in the ashtray in a corridor. A real head scratcher. It is not clear what corridor or floor the corridor was on. But it is believed that the smoking cigarette is evidence similar to a smoking gun and the room mate should be able to shed some light on the mystery. I will be watching for the unraveling of this mystery.
csabo
I'm intrigued by the relevance of a half-smoked cigarette. Was it extinguished or still burning?RIP to the lady whatever the circumstances. Partially smoked cigarettes contain DNA. It could prove the presence of a second person near the time of death. Any persons in contact with a person near the time of a suspicious death are of interest. As no other evidence was found the cigarette may prove useful. Ah, it's been awhile since we last did the balcony-railing-conspiracy theory. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/732422-low-ledges-in-thailand-short-thais-or-poor-safety-engineering/?hl=+railings http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/732829-americans-fatal-fall-from-21st-floor-condo-on-jomtien-beach/page-2?hl=%2Brailings#entry7951053 http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/730210-british-man-falls-to-his-death-at-pattaya-hilton-hotel/page-4?hl=%2Brailings#entry7908520 As I proposed in the past, as flights originating in Europe (and apparently those from Russia) approach Suvarnabhumbi, there should be an obligatory instruction video shown on how to use balconies and those tricky elevator call-buttons, both of which seem to defeat many of our visitors from the north. Your could probably erect railings 2 metres high & top them with razor wire with little effect. Sorry that anyone should end his/her life that way, either intentionally or by accident, but blaming alcohol or some other intoxicant seems more reasonable ... although of course that implies people should act more responsibly instead of trying to put the blame on Thailand for everything. ravip
Of course this may simply be a case of a Russian lady falling off her balcony but surely a Russian would prefer a seaside town such as Pattaya or somewhere on Phuket as opposed to skyscraper Bangkok? Russian mafia (small m) are well known for their ruthlessness towards their 'employees'. I've seen it . Of course you have. Oh well.......time for me to put on my green beret, abseil down a 5 km cliff before taking out 25 terrorists with my pocket knife and a matchstick WOW! I am impressed! Are you Rambo? KhnomKhnom
It is very very difficult SOBER to fall from a balcony or by accident. Most people have a slight or a total fear of heights and feel funny near a high balcony. These are not just slippery floors and low railings. Maroon Watcher
Balconies should be 1m without a "step" up. International Quality Tourist need Quality buildings and International Health & Safety. monk213
They should incorporate netting around Thai buildings on every 3 floors, that way you will know if it is suicide or foul play. The suicides will jump to the net and then out of the net, people who have been pushed or fallen by accident will remain in the nets. Crazy I know but way too many people falling from Thai condos and hotels.
