Water level in Mekong River on the rise in Mukdahan province

MUKDAHAN, 8 August 2014 (NNT) – The water level of the Mekong River is continuously increasing in Mukdahan province.

Run-offs from the North along with additional amount of waters released from nearby creeks have caused the river’s water levels to steadily rise.

According to the Mukdahan Hydrological Survey Center, the water level in Mekong River in Mukdahan measures at 10.50 meters due to continuous rainfall in the province and in the upper part of the province as well, which could cause the river to overflow if it rises above the 12.50 meter mark.

Meanwhile, in Dong Luang and Whan Yai subdistricts, there has been an improvement in the flood situation that has affected many households, fish farms, and farmlands. It is expected that the situation will return to normal soon.

Deputy Mukdahan governor Sorasit Ritsorakrai has warned locals living near steep mountain hills, low-lying areas, and locations prone to flooding to be on the lookout for flashfloods and mudslides.

Lastly, he has suggested locals to closely follow weather updates and be prepared to move their belongings to higher ground in case of emergency.
