Water levels at Buriram Dam lower than last year

BURIRAM, 12 August 2014 (NNT) – The Royal Irrigation Department has urged residents in Buriram province to dismiss unconfirmed reports that the water will overflow from the Lam Nangrong Dam and flood nearby villages.

Recently, there have been widespread rumors that water from the dam will overflow and inundate agricultural land and residential areas, raising fears among locals that a devastating flood will occur again this year.

The department said that on the contrary, only 50 million cubic meters of water are being stored in the dam, out of its total capacity of 121 million cubic meters. In fact, the province has not seen a high volume of rainfall since the rainy season began and water levels in the reservoir areas remain critically low.

If the province continues to face this kind of situation during the next two months, the dam would not be able to provide enough water to irrigate the agricultural lands. Five districts that will be hit hardest include Non Din Daeng, Pakham, Lahan Sai, Nangrong, and parts of Lam Plai Mat districts.

Amazing, how can this possibly be when we have just been reading about ""heavy downpours are devastating Isaan"".
Just goes to show how these headlines are just made up for effect with no thought gone into them at all....lol

It makes sense as it rained less than last year. Not only less than last year but less in a decade! Of course there will be flash floods during September and October, but I don't expect any prolonged floods this year.

I really find it quite astonishing that news articles contradict each other

I am sure I read that the dam had to let go water because it was in danger of bursting

How can this be so

Are some news agencies messing with us?

I mean sure I don't expect TV to check authentic but by crikey I am tired of being in discussion where one day the Thai are applying for drought relief and the next day flooded!

How can that be

I doubt that the drought Bank can keep up. And the flood Bank may pay out before the drought bank has processed the applications

Even TV must think these things are at least odd!
