Marry my Thai boyfriend

Featured Replies

I have Thai citizenship and plan on changing my name upon marriage. My boyfriend is Thai. What are the legal consequences of me legally marrying? I will be using my Thai id so as a woman do I lose any rights upon marriage?

I think to answer your question we need to know if you were born in Thailand, what your ethnicity is and if you have any other citizenship what country it is?

In Thailand de facto relationships are not recognised in law, so mariage certificate from your Amphur would provide legal recognition and rights under Thai marriage law. As you have obtained Thai citizen I assume you have confirmed you retain dual citizenship as it varies by country.

I have American-Thai citizenship. I don't know if a dual national has to differently than a plain foreigner and Thai. It seems odd if I would have to do everything twice.

Do what twice?

If I understand correctly foreigners need a lot of papers to marry while Thais only need a few. Being a dual national this makes me wonder if I have to marry as a foreigner or a Thai. After I recieved my Thai citizenship I still had to go to immagration every 90 days but when came time for visa renewal I didn't need as many papers as before. I just don't know what to expect.

Are you living in Thailand with your US passport? Amphur should be able to tell you what papers & the process for marriage. Alternatively can't your BF assist you? If not search this forum as the question has been raised many times, at least for foreigners wishing to marry a Thai.

I never need to use my passport to do anything unless it's immigration-related. My Thai ID is usually enough. I was hoping I could marry with only the Thai-required documents but I want to make sure. Don't want any unpleasant surprises.

I have a couple of Thai-American friends who are married to Thais. They just used their Thai IDs and didn't mention their US passports to the Amphur (it would just confuse them). Thai marriages are recognized by the US, but you should get the marriage certificate officially translated into English if you want to take your husband back to the US for a visit or for good.

Cool. Glad I won't have to run around Bangkok then. Thanks for the help.

You are a thai citizen, your dual nationality has no effect on your marriage. Thai women do not lose any rights when marrying.

Great. Sometimes the law can be a little vauge when it comes to certain situations. This is new for me and a little scary.

As an American I believe you cannot have dual nationality.

No. I can and do have it. Except the U.S. doesn't like it so they made the process as difficult as possible.

Not true either.......millions of Americans hold dual citizenship.......there is no conspiracy making anything difficult because the US government does not like it. Multiculturalism is deeply rooted in American society and dual citizenship is completely legal.
