Im considering doing this race/ride on 6th december, seems like a decent event for a good cause and its a great place. I was thinking to go 2 or 3 days earlier, drive to the border and ride the bike from there into siem reap. Ive done the border to siem reap a couple times in the taxi and the road seems fine, just one straight long road approx 160km into town.

My wife and daughter would probably join but take the taxi. Was curious to see if anyone would be interested in joining me for such an adventure?

Sounds like a great time! Could you please give me some more info on what your thinking, such as where you'd cross and other details. As it's a long weekend here for the King's Birthday it looks like a fun trip which I'd consider doing the same, ride with you and my family in taxi and then do the family ride with some of them once there on rented bikes. I have a 2, 9 and 11 yr old boys and Thai wife.

Here's the link: http://bike4kids.org/

I'm heading to Angkor Wat Thursday and am excited to do this charity ride in Siem Reap next weekend (http://www.cambodiacycling.com/Angkor_Hospital_for_Children_Charity_Cycling.html)

Hey mate, thanks for the reply and interest. Ahh didnt realise thats the kings bday weekend, hope it wont be too busy then. I would cross at the poipet border crossing, which is only about 200km from my home in chonburi, last time i went there they were widening the highway so hopefully its finished now. Have you been there before? Pretty cool place with quite a few casinos just inside the border and a big market on the thai side selling just about everything. Theres a big security parking that we normally leave the car at also.

Theyve also recently redone the border area, used to take ages to line up getting back into thailand but my friend that just went said it was very quick and hassle free. Getting into cambodia there is relatively easy, just got to ignore all the visa agent guys.

Ive prebooked taxi before but there are plenty waiting in a soi about 200 metres once through the border and can haggle the price down to around 1000 baht for the drive into siem reap. Although if could find a van that could be a good option too.

Enjoy ur trip and ride this week and see now you feel after if would like to do it again. Its a great place, with some good farang food there. I stayed at a really nice resort at a great rate last time but forgot the name, il have to find fit.

Would be good to do it with a small group maybe, i may even post on thaimtb to see if any thai riders or other farang would like to join.

Cheers

Jonny

I thought maybe I'd have my wife drive our van to Siem Reap. I have in Lao before as I have English language Thai Bus license plates on my vehicle. Just an idea but it could be kind of as a support vehicle (not that's it's necessary) but the family could spend the night where we do, lots of room (12 seats) for your family to if your interested. Might be fun for all but just one of many options of course.

Thanks I'm sure I'll enjoy myself. I'll ride around Angkor Wat, for a few day before the charity ride as the last time I was there was before the war in 1968. Next week I'm going to ride from Phnom Penh to the coast, Kep/Kapot area and then hang around the beach/islands for a bit. So how can't I have a great time!!

p.s. Please feel free to Pm me for a personal conversation

Hi Jonny you have done it before so is there any problem going into cambodia and coming back into Thailand with your bike? duty and tax? or clearances needed? Me and my Bro are planning to join the bike for kids on Dec 6 thanks!

While I've never used the specific border crossing you will be using, I've entered Thailand approx 40 times with a bike. Sometimes by land, other times by air and only once was I ever questioned and that was when I flew in with a boxed bike. they asked if it was new. I said no and they didn't bother to look. (It wasn't new; it was a week old and had been ridden once.)

So if your bike is obviously used, there's no duty, no tax, no paperwork, and no problems.

sorry for the slow reply, havnt checked in here for a while. nah ive never actually taken my mike over the border there. ive crossed over ther numerous times though and its all pretty loose there so i very much doubt youd have a problem, just ignore all the dickheads claiming to help you or telling you need this and that. unfortunately do to other events that have popped up im not positive if il still be doing this event now.
