Transfering US cellphone number to Google voice and receiving SMS

Featured Replies

Has anyone in the USA tried transferring their cellphone number to Google voice to receive SMS messages?

I am only interested in receiving SMS texts from my US cellphone number.

My bank requires that I receive a one time password via SMS on the phone number associated with the account as the final step of transfer authentication.

I am trying to close all US cellphone accounts to save money.

Thanks for any input.

Moved to communication.

Any number acquired on or ported a US Mobile carrier to Google Voice acts as a valid Mobile SMS number.

As soon as you port the number your mobile account will be terminated.

Port your number into Google Voice ($20)

If you wish to keep your current mobile service (or keep the contract from terminating early) is may be possible to transfer the existing number to Google Voice and request a number change that would allow keeping the current mobile service contract valid.

I have successfully ported my number to Google Voice without termination of contract, losing unlimited data or corporate discount

Also, Google Voice isn't the only service that can forward SMS.

Google has been treating Google Voice as the ginger-colored step child for far too long, marginalizing it's services and functionality with no plan for improvement.

While I use Google Voice for SMS, I also maintain several other accounts to forward SMS and Voice Calls in case GV decides not to work.

On a security note, Mobile SMS is used to deliver notifications and One-Time-Passwords because it is considered Out-Of-Band (separate from Internet packet data traffic). Using any service to deliver these OOB messages to you via the Internet (while it will work) places the message back In-Band and thus compromises the intent.
