Microsoft is preparing to launch its own video streaming device, based on the Miracast screencasting standard, according to filings with the FCC and WiFi Alliance, unearthed this week by Windows Phone Daily andNokia Power User.

The filings suggest that Microsoft is developing a dongle, dubbed the HD-10, similar to Google’s Chromecast device, with HDMI, WiFi and USB connections. The idea would be to stream content to a television screen from a variety of devices — Windows Phone and Windows 8, presumably, but you never know what Microsoft might do in this new era under CEO Satya Nadella.

GigaOm notes that Miracast doesn’t offer advanced multi-screen features available through Google’s protocol. Miracast also streams directly from the device to a television set, rather than from a remote server.

We’ve contacted Microsoft for comment on the filings. Windows Phone Daily says it expects to hear more about the device at a Microsoft event scheduled for the IFA 2014 conference in Germany on Sept. 4.

I can already get plenty of blue screens on my TV already, just by tuning to a channel that has no signal!

I assume so. There would be no value in making something that's tied to a particular country or region. The Chromecast works just fine.

The issue with Micro$oft is usually price. Can they keep it down to $30?
