I would appreciate feedback about teaching and living in Vietnam. (Hanoi, Da Nang) What is it like, cost of living, social life, etc. I have been teaching in Bangkok for four years and am 58 years old. Have been offered a teaching (ESL) job with big company in Da Nang. Thanks!

Why don't you ask 3lk from "another forum"?

I have no idea what you are talking about? And sorry, I mean Ha Long Bay, not Danang.

Have I perhaps asked a secret, banned or illegal question? whistling.gif

I don't know much personally about Vietnam, but I've met a couple of people (briefly) who taught there, and from what I gathered the money was good, especially when compared to the cost of living (And from when I've visited there on holidays, I found that the general cost of food was very low).

Although I'm not sure if the people I spoke with were maybe both at good schools with high salaries compared to others or not

While you read and hear English teachers are "backpackers" in Thailand, this rumor/fact is more prevalent in Vietnam. Smoking dope also seems to be a big motivator for teachers to go there. However, it does pay more than Thailand with about the same cost of living according to all. I've actually never been myself but again have read a lot and it seems to be more of an after school aka "language school" setting as opposed to getting immersed in an actual school.

Thanks, all. What I also would like to know, what are the average monthly costs for rented accommodation? Seems to be a lot of conflicting reports on the net. And tax seems high. Up to 35%!
