I have here an H 264 Digital Video Recorder. There is some footage on it that I need. Problem is, no one knows the password of the box...

I took the HDD out but windows doesn't detect it.

Any idea how to reset the PW without deleting the data on the HDD?

Put the drive back in the DVR.

What is the make/model of the DVR unit? Knowing that a google search should turn up the default (which is probably printed on the device label)

Many have passwords of 1234 or 4321, 123456, 111111 ... etc. Better to look up by make and manufacturer.

i would contact vendor, they properly have a way to reset it.

i feel quite sure that it should be able to mount disk on either linux or win, but it could be encrypted or something. but even if thats so, should be possible to mount it i guess.

unless they use some custom filesystem of some kind, which i doubt

what make/model is it?

Linux cannot recognize he HDD either....

The posts recommending to contact the vendor should be tried first. Failing that, what do you mean by Linux can't recog the HD?

Look through the output of dmesg for a description of the drive, it should be seeing the actual hardware. Look for where it describes the partitions on that drive, it should include file system that is being used. My guess is its a standard file system of some description. manually mount the largest partition (read only for safety) and see what you can see. If you see movie files, copy them off to your HD, sort through them and see what it is you want.

If all you see is one large file with a read me, the readme is probably going to tell you how to mount the encrypted file system inside the big file. At this point you can try cracking the password and mounting the big file yourself,.... oooorrrr

Copy the big file to your google drive or drop box, and email a link to it to yourself saying how important the plans included in the file are to your upcoming jihad.

The NSA will be in touch shortly. ask them for your movie.
