Thailand misses its revenue target by 168 billion baht

BANGKOK, 20 Sep 2014, (NNT) -The Director General of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), Krissada Jinawijarana has revealed that Thailand generated 1.88 trillion baht during the period of October 2013 - August 2014, which was lower than the target by 168 billion baht.

Mr. Krissada attributed the missing 8.2% revenue to the VAT and tariffs on imports, Corporate Income Tax, Excise Tax on cars, and the Fuel Tax, all of which produced less revenue than anticipated.

He stated that domestic and international economies were on the decline during the period, negatively affecting the Government’s revenue collection in the 2014 fiscal year.

Nonetheless the FPO Director General takes the view that the situation will improve in the 2015 fiscal year due mainly to restored levels of confidence.

Thailand seeks to introduce more fruits into Brunei

Thailand is seeking to increase the volume of Thai fruits into Brunei as the local population becomes increasingly familiar with its products, its ambassador said yesterday.

In an interview following the launch of the Thai Fruit Promotion Fair 2014 at the Airport Mall, Apichart Phetcharatana told The Brunei Times that he is certain of growing demand for Thai fruits from Bruneians such as the month-long variety of durians which are known for its creamy texture and sweet taste.

“We want to give Bruneians an expanded selection of fruits to enjoy…so we’re trying to bring in other varieties of fruits such as mangoes and rose apples,” he said. Apart from fresh fruits, he said that the Thai embassy is also hoping to introduce preserved fruits and other finished products derived from Thai fruits.

According to MrApichart, Thailand has been renowned for its fruit exports particularly to Southern China where demand for the tropical fruits is large. He said that the fruits are usually exported to the area by land transport which can take up to a week.

The Thai fruit fair event, which will continue until September 21, showcases a wide variety of Thai fruits such as mangosteen, longan, mangoes, rambutans and preserved fruits. Activities during the fair include fruit tasting, exhibition and demonstration of fruit storing techniques to preserve its quality. The event is supported by the Thai Department of Agricultural Extension under the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
