Blasphemy case: Scot shot in Pakistan jail

(BBC) A 70-year-old Scot jailed in Pakistan on blasphemy charges has been shot and wounded by a policeman.

Muhammad Asghar, who is from Edinburgh, was arrested in 2010 after writing letters to a number of people claiming to be a prophet.

A court in Rawalpindi convicted him of blasphemy earlier this year.

The attack is said to have taken place inside the Adiyala Jail, where he was being held.

Mr Asghar's family and lawyers have said he has a history of mental illness.

British politicians and activists have been campaigning for his release, urging the Pakistani government to intervene in his case so he can be treated.

He is about as much Scottish as we are Thai

So what's the criteria to be Scottish? How many generations do your family have to live in a country before you're considered a native of the country?

Like my cousin moved to America from Scotland. Had two kids there who were born and raised and live in the States. His kids consider themselves American, they're citizens, have passports etc. Are they wrong..?

Will their kids then be American?

Eh? He can easily be Scottish. There are plenty of people with Pakistani heritage in Scotland, generations on, who are considered Scottish. Born and bred there.

Yeah, we got a lot of those in England. The ones up in Rotherham are quite notorious.

As there are with Dutch, German, Irish, French and so on. Or do you only get to be Scottish if you've got some sort of pure bloodline which you can trace back to the Gaels and the Picts?

"without a tartan he's just a farang in Scotland" may wish to research this subject: "Ask an Englishman and he will tell you how Thomas Rawlinson, an English native, invented the kilt in the 18th century! " Tartans were a marketing trick.

Probably was born in UK as poor deluded fool thinks religion is more a hobby than a code of law. How can you blaspheme something that doesn't exist? Religion of peace demonstrates what can happen if they have political clout.

Which hotel was this? I know most of the hotels in Glasgow. .

Which Scottish clan does Muhammad Asghar, belong to?

Poor sod, he does need psychiatric help.

Best leave him there with his own people, no whisky to tempt him, fried mars bars, haggis butty , sheep to tempt him the list goes on, save a few quid on the NHS, SS, BUs Pass the savings would be quite significant.

you'll probably find his lawyers were infidels, and Shariah Courts only deal with lawyers of their own kind when the case gets serious

With a name like that

This 70 year old certainly sounds like a Scot.

British maybe ...but Scot

Mmmmmm.

A rather prejudiced comment. There have been Muslims in the UK for 300 years, the first Indian restaurant opened in 1810 and was owned by a Bengalese Muslim. Although it is unlikely that this mans heritage stretches back this far, regardless he is from Edinburgh, therefore a Scot.

If Hock is your last name then presumably you are Bavarian?

Like many third-world countries, Pakistan does not really recognize the concept of mental illness. Thai law is pretty much the same way. Once you are in the clutches of the police, you are at their mercy.

Beware of false prophets especially those who send you to prison for speaking out about them and richer then most banks in developed countries.

Scots are actually British too.

And quite a few Mohammeds and Abduls are now born there.

We had a Sihk in turban and kilt promoting the YES vote last week.

Turn down your sensitivity dial.

That's going to be rather difficult as that poster is a supporter of Islam.

That is his prerogative.

What is not his prerogative, is to throw allegations of bigotry around. Especially when there was no such thing.

Or perhaps he could explain who the bigotry was aimed against ?

Jocks ?

Pakistanis ?

Muslims ?
