International Driving License

Featured Replies

I have a valid 5 yr Thai driving license and I am going back to the USA/Canada and would like to get an International Driving license issued in Thailand to use there.

Does anyone know where I can get this International Driving license in Thailand, what documents are needed, how long does it take to process, and how much does it cost? Will it be accepted in USA/Can.? Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks for any info.

I think you can get them at any land Transport office, there was certainly a notice about them in the Chonburi office. If I remember right the fee was 550 Baht but cannot remember what was required. The notice was in English so should be available to foreigners. Best to ring your local office as they appear to have variations in procedures.

Sandyf is correct. I got one for the UK, which was accepted for a hire car with no problems.

Check for the US state you'll be driving in. In many cases, including countries like UK, a Thai DL is legal, no need for an IDP.

Just wondering what the rules are for say a Canadian citizen driving in Canada on a Thai licence with Thai issued IDP or US citizen driving in the US on a Thai licence and Thai issued IDP.

I only ask as in QLD Australia a traffic cop told me that Australian citizens must use an Australian licence to drive in Oz.

Because the current Thai licenses have all the pertinent info in English, you will not need an IDL in the States.

In Canada, it may depend on the provinces involved.

Your comment about English would make common sense, if common sense were to prevail and the comment about Canada is a good example.

Canada is an English speaking nation, but ignored in Quebec province. I was on the Montreal metro and the train came to a halt in the tunnel, the only tannoy message was in French.
