BANGKOK, Sept 26 -- A draft law amending Thailand's intellectual property rights is expected to be approved by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) and enforced soon, according to Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn.

Ms Apiradi’s remarks were made Thursday while witnessing the annual destruction of seized goods violating IPR worth Bt2 billion, considered to be the highest value of pirated goods ever destroyed by Thailand.

Counterfeit goods weighing some 80 tonnes consisted of clothing, handbags and luggage, watches, auto spare parts, and more, went up in smoke was also witnessed by senior officials of the Royal Thai Police, the Customs Department and other government agencies.

Ms Apiradee said violations of intellectual property in Thailand have declined as the interim government has paid extra attention to the issue, and related agencies have also cooperated.

At present Thailand is on the United States government’s Priority Watch List, she said. It is hoped that several countries, especially the United States, would be satisfied and reconsider Thailand's place on list as the amending law is expected to be approved soon, she said.

The destruction of goods violating IPR is to ensure manufacturers of genuine goods that IP infringements receive attention by Thai authorities and to also ensure that counterfeit goods would not be exported. (MCOT online news)

I can go see November Man right now at the mall or I can buy a stolen copy on DVD at the same mall.

I had to endure it on a VIP bus trip last week. Piracy goes to the core of Thai society along with many other worse traits ...

This story is a waste of space. Not one word about what the new draft law contains.

I would have thought that would be the most important part of the story. NOT!

The person who wrote this story would not have passed their journalism class, in most countries.

With your Senior Citizen or Student discount card, it's only 80 bht to see it in the cinema.

Hardly worth buying a pirate copy IMHO.

"Thailand is on the United States government’s Priority Watch List"

Thailand seems to be on a lot of US government lists and none of them for anything to take pride in.

Hopefully, they tell the Tourism Authority of Thailand to stop stealing others' photos and posting them on Facebook

Now we see why the US is "Satisfied" with their anti-human trafficing efforts - inspite of being downgraded to the worst tier of that ladder, and is "Reasured" by their commitment to democratic values - inspite of recently binning a democratically elected gov.

Just agree to our IP laws and we don't care how many women you sell in the markets, we don't care how many children work from morning till midnight, we don't care about your "elections" to be held "next year".

A winks as good as a nod to a blind horse eh, know what I mean, eh?

Just disgusting.
