Fab5BKK
Just ridiculous! I've been living / working in a number of very dangerous countries for several years and never "compromised" as you said. Please don't use the word "culture" when it's just extortion and armed-attack. BTW, not sure they "use" the same "culture" when they deal with their fellow citizens. Just my 2 cents Do you mean, if I understood you well, we, as "falangs", must carry vaseline and accept it? No wonder Thais think we're easy targets! Sorry, not my style. Good god don't any of you have any balls, do you enjoy bending over and letting any Thai give it to you, pathetic! Here's the next victim. It's not about having balls and bending over...it's all about life in a country that we are not originally from. It's about compromising... It's about learning to live in a different culture than our own. If you are not willing to compromise or learn the culture and want to live by your standards without a care in the world for the country you live in (Thailand), then why stay here? Why not just go back to your own country? It's people like you who cause all the problems and then place the blame on others. No, that's not what I'm saying at all. What does compromise mean in your vocabulary? Would you agree that living in a different country that has a different culture than the one you come from must be learned and compromises must be made and adjustments must be considered? There's a give and take you have to play in this country...it's not carrying Vaseline to make sure you lube up prior to paying an overpriced parking attendant. It's just respecting the culture and or making sure you don't get attacked by 10 Thai males with knives, machetes, sticks and guns. You learn to live in this country without having to lube up!
laislica
I wudda paid Well there you have it - you pay and endorse the scam..... I wudda said I paid finished, in the shop already! When enough people have the balls strength to stand up to them, the scam will not work. A difficult decision but to smash at his car with a "handy piece of wood" - premeditated - book him Danno! It's time the authorities made an example of this sort of behaviour as a deterrent ot others. Anyway, didn´t a Thai newspaper say that another witness apprehended the attendant and that the car was not parked in the car park area but outside the shop he visited? Makes me wonder if the attendant was on Yabba!
doggie888888
Steet urchins asking for money if you happen to park on their patch of public road...happens in KL and Jakarta. Probably Mumbai and Manila too. I venture to guess it happens in most places where there is widespread poverty, unequal wealth and lax law enforcement. Up to us as individuals how to react. Pay up the small fee and move on or, kick up a fuss over a principle but at great risk to self ?
watcharacters
We all know that this story is unfair......we all know that hitting a 70 year old man is downright sick regardless of whether he is in the right or wrong. But we all know that we need to play the game ...get ripped off every now and then and walk away. Only a matter of time before a few expats get together and form a vigilante group to dish out some payback to the scum in this town tho. Might make the "pack" attackers think twice too ! Sure, There will be a meeting at "The Tattooed Oaf", Soi Deaddog when alan653 arrives. Watch this space. Do you know the individual involved with the broken arm? Utter rubbish, they don't try that bit of culture on Thai blokes do they, and i know what would happen if they did. Exactly. Why do these people come on here and spout about being in another country and cause trouble for others , yet ignore the very fact you have just stated . Then come out with crap like go back to your own country , well been here 30+ plus years , well before dickheads like this guy who makes foreigners look like walk overs ruined it for someone like me whose home it is. Of course you have to compromise be polite, be culturally sensitive but not in all circumstances. He is probably an old retiree, he was probably the miserable git I said hello this morning in 7-11 and completely blanked me.this behaviour I find extraordinarily rude. Believe it or not there was a time when foreigners actually said hello to each other on the street or introduced themselves..

ThailandGuy
Beautiful Thailand is loosing its beautiful face more and more over these unnecessary incidents. Guest
At the end of the day, it comes down to this... if you want to draw the line for 40 THB, be a bad ass and square off with someone at 2;30 AM ... the general idea is one of you is supposed to leave in a lot worse shape than when it started. I looked at the picture of this "chap" and the one thought that did not come to mind was "bad ass." In the words of Clint Eastwood, "A man has got to know his limitations..." Street fight, Brit loses, cries like a baby ... which only makes him less "bad ass" Move on folks ... nothing to see here. Another case of 'Brit bashing?' Not necessary old boy. (I am from USA, BTW) Brit Bashing? There is such a thing? i did not know that. Anyway, from one American to another, I would write the same thing if he was from Boston .. but in Boston, when we get out of our cards and square up. we know the score and live with the outcome. You see, you missed the point .. he could have just kept driving. he got out for a fight, and got what he went shopping for. Only Thai Visa could make something so basic, so complicated. freedom4life
Nice of the man in uniform to squeeze his arm to see if he was telling the truth. Should have paid his parking fee. If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure. If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine. So the procedure includes getting smacked with a piece of wood? Come on bud. This whole violent thing and extortion-of-money towards foreigners better stop...
Asiantravel
Yet another example of why I will never own or operate a motor vehicle in Thailand. Although I have to say rank stupidity of both of these individuals seemed to have prevailed. Where I come from parking rates are known and accepted upon arrival, not departure. Anything else is inviting a scam. In any event, the Brit violated one of my cardinal rules: AVOID CONFRONTATIONS (and attempting to drive away is not necessarily the best way to do so). I see arrogant Westerners transplanting their car and biker culture to Thailand where wealth-envy derangement syndrome is rampant and the infrastructure cannot support the number of vehicles owned just by Thais and wonder at the stupidity. As to the totally out-of-control motorbike situation in Thailand, the Japanese motorbike manufacturers must really love the Thai people for their obsession with those dangerous, polluting machines. EoR (End of Rant) " I see arrogant Westerners transplanting their car and biker culture to Thailand where wealth-envy derangement syndrome is rampant and the infrastructure cannot support the number of vehicles owned just by Thais and wonder at the stupidity. ford8
There is a lot of macho posturing on TV. I wonder what these fantasists would think of this..... After Jeremy Clarkson's father-in-law died, his daughter discovered a Victoria Cross in his effects. He had never bothered to tell anyone ! Probably not because he felt he did not deserve it. "quote" Throughout the whole course of the Battle of Arnhem, Major Cain showed superb gallantry. His powers of endurance and leadership were the admiration of all his fellow officers and stories of his valour were being constantly exchanged amongst the troops. His coolness and courage under incessant fire could not be surpassed."unquote" Edited October 6, 2014 by ford8

PatrickHames
how convienent that a piece of wood was nearby.and look at the smirk on the coppers face as he squeezes his arm. You seem to have missed the expression on the Brit's face. Obviously playing it for all it's worth. And undoubtedly he played arrogant Khun Farang when approached by the attendant. He certainly is to be congratulated on saving the Baht 40. Stupid Brit trying to get away without paying. Probably did not feel he had too as it was just a short stop. But of course the violence was over the top but some foreigners think they can get away with anything. Your reference to his nationality is stupid and not relevant to the story at all. Then you go a level lower in stupidity with " some foreigners think they can get away with anything " How stupid a comment is that ???!!!! He is not a criminal trying to get away with anything at all. He's being scammed and has objected, then the coward assaults him, a man of 70 , with a piece of wood . He's a coward. Please reply with more stupidity.
chrissables
I believe the old fart should have just paid the 40 baht. Talk about cheap Charlie. He should have never illegally parked or gotten out of his car. Not smart to challenge a younger man. If it was your father or grandfather, would you be so stupid to say this. It's not about the money its about extortion. People should stand up to people who do this, and as another poster wrote, "he would NEVER hit a 70 year old Thai man"! Spaniel
Another thing that annoys me a lot here is that in some restaurants, when you finish eating, "car park" staff spot you from one mile away, run to you to escort you to your car, help you open/close the door etc... The essence of Thailand. They "pretend" to be nice and to help you. But they are just putting pressure on you to tip them. This is a form of extortion. I never give them any money Be reasonable. I think your evaluation of the parking situation at some restaurants is a bit off. Over the years I have eaten at many places that had parking attendants and although it is a service I could probably do without, I never had a problem giving the attendant a few bhat tip for his/her help. "But they are just putting pressure on you to tip them" I guess we have been parking at different lots because I never felt pressured by any of them. Lighten up! Next time give the guy a few bhat. Their is no set fee and I'm sure anybody working as a parking attendant could use the extra money.

jaywalker
As a British resident he should have known how the situation with the parking fees here and swallowed his anger and paid up, silly man. Doesn't deserve a beating, though. Yeah! You almost have to pay to spit on the sidewalk in Pattaya. Old geezer made some parking attendant (likely a relative of that guy kicking sand on the lady on the beach) lose face or his thug boss said "Go rough-up the old man". What ever happened to CALL THE POLICE IF YOU HAVE A DISPUTE??? hahahahahahaha! Sad, but true. Like inviting Dracula to a blood transfusion. Steering clear of altercations in Pattaya can be done...Been doing it since 1999. I don't know the particulars of this incident.......maybe he was new or just stupid or just pissed/drunk or all 3. I DO know I had a serious face-plant with some gravel on the Pattaya Dark-Side one day at a bar of ill repute (Black Pearl) on my way out. I was drunk enough to deserve it.....Som nam na.....I did it to myself. The staff DID rush to my aid, as I was plastered out of my gourd. I got a right pretty black-eye & skinned my face up a bit. Luckily my neighbor got me home & deposited me on my front porch. His name was Bob. Wife asked what happened to my face. I said "Bob hit me" & passed out on the couch. Bob never hit me. He drove me home. He was my best friend. I never told my wife any different. She hates the sight of Bob to this day... Bob took (and is still taking) the heat off that for me, from my wife. What a pal. ------------------- My point is, one can get just about as stupid as you want to get...... DO NOT ever make a Thai "Lose Face" though, which is, I'm guessing, is what happened here. Tham1
The car park opposite the Diana Dragon is in front of the Metropole and has a barrier that clearly says "No Parking". As such he should have expected to pay an attendant for allowing him to park there. Having said that we do not know whether the car park owners were employing the attendant or whether the attendant was minding cars for a fee for his own profit. I seriously doubt the Metropole would employ the little scrote pictured for anything other than cleaning the septic tank
