Myanmar, Thailand pledge to boost relations

NAY PYI TAW, Oct 10 -- Myanmar and Thailand reaffirm bilateral relations, continue to live in peace and harmony as the two Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries embark on the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) next year, said Myanmar President Thein Sein.

Speaking during a dinner party hosted Thursday in honour of visiting Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, President Thein Sein said although the two neighbours do not share the same idea on certain issues, they can still live in peace and relations can be strengthened through economic cooperation for the sake of developing both countries and good relations forever.

Gen Prayut, now paying a two-day official visit to Myanmar--his first trip abroad after becoming prime minister in August, said Myanmar and Thailand share a very long border and have enjoyed warm relations in every field.

Myanmar is reforming the country in preparations for AEC, said Gen Prayut, adding that he and the Thai government would continue to cherish the good relations with Myanmar through developing the border.

Gen Prayut said he would meet with concerned Thai officials on further developing the border after he returns home.

He left the Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw for Yangon early today to meet Thai business community at the Thai embassy before returning home.

There are about 2,000 Thai business community members in Yangon, including those running small- and medium-sized enterprises, technology businesses and branches of big companies in Thailand.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn called on Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services of Myanmar and also foreign minister, and discussed warm relations between the two countries. (MCOT online news)

I think just a lot of polite posturing as Myanmar are in the limelight with plenty of international investment.

The rest of the world is far more important.
