Some 10,000 Rohingya 'will arrive soon'

BANGKOK: -- THE authorities are stepping up measures to prevent the illegal inflow of Rohingya from neighbouring Myanmar.

Illegal entries by members of this ethnic group usually soar between November and April every year - after the monsoon period has ended.

The Rohingya - who are Muslim - have been fleeing for years from Myanmar's western Rakhine State, where they face severe repression in most facets of daily life by a government that regards them as "Bengalis" from Bangladesh.

"Security agencies have estimated that more than 10,000 Rohingya people will arrive in Thailand via Ranong and nearby provinces between next month and April next year," Deputy Ranong Governor Pinij Boonlert said yesterday.

Pinij was acting for the Ranong governor, who is the ex-officio chief of Ranong's Internal Security Operations Command, in instructing local authorities on how to address the Rohingya problem.

He said the illegal inflow of Rohingya meant Thailand would have to shoulder an extra burden. "It is a big problem."

But he said Thai law clearly stipulates that illegal migrants must be deported. The presence of illegal migrants could threaten national security and increase other risks.

During the past few days, officials have arrested more than 200 Rohingya in southern Thailand.

An informed source claimed some illegal migrants ran into the ocean when they spotted officials and were swept away by waves and not seen again. Their fate remained unknown as of press time.

Pinij said the ISOC had laid down guidelines to handle Rohingya issues.

"We shall treat them in line with humanitarian principles, respect for their human rights and international laws. But we will have to deport them," he said.

Focus on agents

And if an illegal migrant was found to be linked to an agent smuggling people, a probe would be launched to find the agent. "Such agents have flouted Thai laws," he said.

Pinij said the authorities believed there were many human smugglers because Rohingya were often found with mobile phones.

Relevant authorities plan to educate the public so people understand that the presence of the illegal migrants could adversely affect the country.

Pinij said a number of Rohingya used small fishing trawlers to travel some 1,400km from Myanmar's Maungdaw to Ranong. "They will usually hide on some nearby island, split into very small groups, then sneak into Thailand," he said.

Well considering Thailand is an alleged member of the UN, they have rights to remain when seeking asylum, and Thailand should treat them as asylum seekers fleeing a vicious regime, and not be simply hell bent on getting 'this low life scum', as it sees them, merely deported a.s.a.p.

I am interested to know why the influx occurs after the monsoon period though. Don't want to get their feet wet? whistling.gif

"... people understand that the presence of the illegal migrants could adversely affect the country."

Absolutely true. Their presence will trigger a new wave of inhumane treatment for which Thailand will have to defend as "Thainess" and lack of others' understanding. Thaland's rigid zenophobic policies toward Rohinya's will never indear it to membership to the UN Humantarian Council and that would be a good thing.

Could say the same thing for Australia who have an appalling record of mistreating illegal immigrants.

If the report must mention religion, they really should put the word Buddhist in between 'a' and 'government'.

Right after the words "xenophobic, religiously bigoted".

"Pinij said the authorities believed there were many human smugglers because Rohingya were often found with mobile phones." Gotta love that Thai logic! While you are at it, arrest every Thai with mobile phone because they are probably working the other end of human smuggling pipeline. No one needs to text that much unless engaged in illegal activity!

Get real!! They originally entered Burma illegally. They are different in religion and ethnicity. They have no rights unless they apply for Asylum in the correct way. If they enter a country illegally, then they are criminals. Why would a Buddhist Nation like Thailand want 10,000 more Muslims when they can't handle the ones already here.

Can you imagine 10,000 buddhists arriving on the shores of Saudi Arabia and how they would be treated ??

That's great. The pancake craze is arriving along with K-pop from Korea and we need more Rohingya illegals to sell these pancakes. They can also double up helping torture suspects when police need a rest from their important work.

Always look on the bright side of life, maybe a good time for investing in a Roti Pancake franchise?

There are 135 different Ethnic groups in Myanmar.

Not all are Buddhist.

The Rohingya are one of them and one of the most persecuted.

They are not illegal migrants. They have lived in this region for generations. Centuries according to some records.

The reality is completely different. Thailand is treating not only refugees against all human principles, but also the slave workers from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. For Thais anything is o.k, as long as you can make money out of it. But a huge outcry in Thai media, when Finland deports Thai workers, when they stay illegally in the country after the work contract has finished. Very much Thai logic.

How many hundreds of thousands of Burmese are already in Thailand ? Actually, is it millions ? And how many of them are illegal migrant workers ? These are the people who work as slave labour for Thai companies.

Is ten thousand that much of a big deal ? So they're coming soon. This reminds me of all that nonsense about how a flood of Romanians was suppose to enter England at the beginning of this year. All that talk of the new rules regarding Eastern Europe. In the end, only a few hundred turned up in January 2014. It made a lot of people look pretty stupid.

I wouldn't call anyone a racist who hates a faith, as religion has nothing to do with race and everything with an individuals right to choose the faith of their choice.

I'd say hating the followers of a faith (any faith) and refusing to allow them entry to a country based on the idea they are different is a bigotry not a racism.

Either that or someone who has been mislead by the lurid propaganda of bigots. Be they the terrorists who commit hideous atrocities to further their warped cause or those who use these crimes to further their equally warped campaigns of hate and intolerance.
