Well, I kept it safe for three years, but someone who should not have been in my passport was, and now my departure card is long departed.

What will happen when I cross the land border into malaysia? Fine? I do have a photo copy. Will that suffice?

It's no issue, even less so as you have a copy.

Just fill in a new one at the border and tell the immigration chap what's happened.

When I got a re-entry at the airport, I went to the immigration desk on my way out......"where's your departure card", he said. It was in there when i did my re-entry, but the officer must have taken it out. The officer at the desk just gave me a new one to fill out. No problem.

A copy be right handy. I also write the TM # down in my calendar.

At Immigration, they'll probably just write your old TM # on the new card, at least that's what I did a few years ago when I also lost my card.

It's happened to me a few times over the years. As stated just fill a new one in at the boarder before visiting the immigration officer. No problem and no drama.

Not sure why this card is made such a big issue of when giving immigration photocopies. As noted, it's no big deal if you lose it and the important stamp is the entry one in your passport. Many countries have a similar card that you keep and hand in as you leave, after all it's really just only a departure card!

Anyone know why it's a big deal at immigration?

It is the number on it. That is the primary reference number they use for their records. It goes back many years and has not been changed. If you fill out any immigration form you will need to put that number on it.

No problem to lose one if you are leaving the country but if you go to some immigration offices to do something without one they will want a police report for the lost one before you get a new one.

That's the number in the bottom right corner?

ABC 55999?

On the Departure part the number is top right under the barcode.

I'm assuming both parts have the same number.
