Hard Drive Of DELL Inspiron On Its Way To Die Again After Only One Year...

Hello and Sawadee Khrap,

I'd just posted a thread, if 4 GB of DDR memory would increase a Windows 7 32 bit system.. Now I've experienced some pretty much odd behavior and found out through "Hard drive sentinel" that My hard rive's health is down to 45 %.

I had a Acronis back up before, but just recently deleted all back ups to free space on my external drive. I just out on Acronis 2014 and it's impossible to make a back up now.

What could I do that I don't have to put all stuff on again.? Hard drive is about 14 months old. Brand: Seagate.I saw on option that you can change back ups made with windows into Acronis?

What would be the beat way to save my data? Thanks a lot in advance.

What's the best available brand I can get in Thailand? Just curious, as this HD is just 14 months old, the former one made it only eight months.

Just not in the mood to replace them so often.

Any useful input would be deeply appreciated. It seems to me that i's obviously not Seagate.

The only thing you can say about mechanical hard drives is that they will all die sooner or later. And when they die is just a matter of averages.

So you can buy the world's most expensive drive from the best manufacturer and have it fail a week later, or buy the world's cheapest drive and have it last for 10 years.

The ONLY answer is to assume that all your drives will die tomorrow and backup regularly.

When you replace the hard drive, check all your fans are dust free and run properly, and that your cabling is such that it doesn't impede airflow. If your fans aren't working as they should then overheating won't help the life of your next hard drive either.

get another harddrive and use acronis to do a clone copy, then you can just swop over the harddrives and your system is just like your old one, if there is no room in the case for another hardrive then a sata to usb connector cable/kit can be bought for a few hundred baht.

Look here Though peruse the whole article.

Thanks a lot for providing this article. my "Seagate" was made in China, which explains a lot.

I can choose between a Hitachi 500 Gb for 1,550 baht, with a one year warranty, or a Western Digital for 1,900 baht, (also 500 GB), but with a three year warranty.

I think I go for the Hitachi, made in Japan, the Western Digital are produced in Thailand. Thanks a lot to all of you!!

If you are going to change your laptop's hard drive, do yourself a favor and consider putting in a SSD drive instead. Yes, they are more pricey than a HDD but they can give a big performance boost to any computer....they sure did in my Lenovo laptop and Toshiba laptop....I have a Samsung 840EVO in one laptop and a Seagate 600 Series in the other.

Just for the irony of it. Hitachi (HGST) is actually owned by Western Digital nowadays. Fortunately, they still maintain the quality they are renowned for.

For a laptop, I would definitely go for SSD or at least a hybrid SSHD from Seagate if you're price conscious.

Thanks a lot. To be honest, I can't afford it right now to buy a SSD, will check how much one will be, later as I have to go downtown anyways.

Well, if Hitachi is owned by Western Digital and I can get a 500 GB from WD, with a three year warranty, I might go this way, if a SSD isn't affordable for me.

It might sound funny, but living on a teacher's salary with a family and a car is pretty tough. Anything that hits you with unexpected 3 K, or more makes a huge difference.

Thanks to all of you guys, it's nice to have such a forum with knowledgeable guys like you.

Cheers.-

You have been talking a 500GB drive, but how big of a drive do you really need? Like right now, how many GBs is on your drive? Unless you are storing a bunch of video files I wouldn't be surprised to guess you are using around 125GB. If so, a 250GB would still leave you plenty of space for future storage, provide a big performance boost to your computer, and you can pickup a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB drive at JIB for Bt4,900 nowdays...Samsung SSDs are top quality and among the fastest. Then take your old drive, put it inside an external USB 3.0 enclosure which costs abut Bt300 and you have external storage also. I just hate to see someone pass up the chance to switch to an SSD when the timing is right and they are kinda forced to swap drives.

There is a BIG difference between 1,900 and 4,900. 4,900 isn't a good price anyway. I'm turning those drives down at 3500 baht here in the UK. In fact I just purchased the 500 GB version for less than 5000 baht. smile.png Waiting for delivery...

If you are running one of those Drives, there is a Firmware Update

Yeap, you are right...but I was assuming he would just buy in Thailand and JIB is one of the lower cost stores. I bought my two "500GB" SSDs from the U.S. off TigerDirect.com approx 5 months ago for approx 50 to 60% of the going Thailand price at the time as compared to places like JIB and INVADEIT. I could basically get a 500GB SSD from the U.S. for the price of a 250GB SSD in Thailand. Had them shipped to some friends in the U.S. who a few weeks later delivered them personally when they were passing through Bangkok. Firmware on my SSDs is up to date...and the Samsung SSD includes a program called Samsung Magician to check/update firmware, SMART data, optimize setup, setup RAPID which utilizes some of your RAM to make the SSD even faster, and can easily do a variety of things. The Seagate SSD does not have such an easy, capable, all-in-one program. The Samsung SSD is also a little faster than the Segatae SSD.

Example of one of the Samsung Magician screens:

Where are you buying a Samsung EVO 500GB for less than 5000 baht (US $155) from?

Thanks, I know that you're right. Just bought a Hitachi 500 GB yesterday for 1,550 baht and will wait until the other one dies.

I have a lot of other storage, a 1 TB Samsung and a 160 GB Toshiba, both external USB drives.

Thanks a lot to all your useful information,

Must have been a brief, hot promotion type sale for the 500GB drive based on the prices shown for the two smaller EVO drives and since the desktop upgrade portion is usually just a cheap 2.5" to 3.5" adapter and a SATA cable.

Just your earlier statement of "I'm turning those drives down at 3500 baht here in the UK. In fact I just purchased the 500 GB version for less than 5000 baht" implied that was a price easily found in the UK now vs a brief, hot promotional thing. It was definitely a good promotion for a 500GB 840EVO. JIB also has a Kingston 240SSD drive for Bt3,990 for those wanting to buy in Thailand.

You are making it up as you go along... :) What I actually wrote was, "I'm turning those drives(Samsung 840 EVO 250GB) down at 3500 baht here in the UK. In other words, I had them available for £70 but turned it down. That is what I wrote and that is what I meant.

In other words, the price that you quoted was no bargain at all. Especially when the OP's budget was much less in the first place.

For folks buying computer items in Thailand I think many are familiar with JIB which has many stores around the country...here in Bangkok they are in many malls. When thinking about buying a computer item and would like to get an idea of the typical price in Thailand versus running around to a bunch of stores, and since JIB is a large operation in Thailand and usually on the below average side of prices for many computer items in Thailand, you can look at their Price List on their website at this Link. Cheers.
