World's Top Ten Gay Friendly Travel Destinations (not Thailand)

Featured Replies

According to Lonely Planet so do they mean friendly for gay backpackers?

No, backpacker is not a sexual allusion unless you want it to be.

1. Copenhagen, Denmark
2. New Zealand
3. Toronto, Canada
4. Palm Springs, USA
5. Sitges, Spain
6. Berlin, Germany
7. Skiathos & Mykonos, Greece
8. New York City, USA
9. Reykjavik, Iceland
10. Montevideo, Uruguay

Which of these places have you been to?

Are you bummed Thailand didn't make the list?

Any surprises of places that did make the list?

I've been to Copenhagen, Toronto, Sitges, Mykonos, and NYC and what's not to like (except Toronto in winter)?

Thailand? Whatever. whistling.gif I think the issue with Thailand is the perception about commercial sex. Probably more so with a joint like Lonely Planet.

Surprised a bit about Montevideo. Just not on my radar as a gay travel destination per se. Iceland has become super trendy so not surprised about that.

I suppose a lot of people assume San Francisco and Amsterdam should always make such lists, but I am beyond being surprised when they don't. If nothing else, the boredom factor, been there done that for the majority of worldly gay travelers.

For the adventure gay tourist, I'd recommend Moscow and/or Mosul, Iraq. Tehran would be on the list as well.

Unfortunately, the above list is a little surprising. I've been to several of the places, but didn't think of them as being big destinations.
