What is the law rules for practice driving with a friend?

Featured Replies

What your asking is.... "is it legal to drive a car with no licence"?. I think the answer to that is fairly obvious....why would any of us get a licence if it was. Makes no difference what your passenger has if you have nothing. As suggested, find a quite place if you wish to risk it like a large car park or a market ground (when the market is elsewhere).

I guess this all depends on how you are driving as well,,, if you are bouncing on and off the parked cars whilst careering down the road you will probably have a problem..

There are no rules as far as I am aware but you would have to assume that means it is not permitted. Also, when you do finally pass the joke of a driving test there are no restrictions on what you can drive as the insurance system is completely different to the Western world,,,

Good luck,

Good luck,

Please read the thread and have a look at your answer after doing that.

A lot depends on where you live . I taught my wife to drive in rural Isaan . We started on a school playing field , then graduated to very minor country roads/tracks , then to regular main roads .

I believe , but don't know , that a person driving under instruction from a qualified licenced driver there would be no problem . There are a few driving schools in a big city , but nothing in the country .

If you have a valid foreign drivers licence from your own country , apply for a 1 year Thai drivers licence .

So in my case if my friend had a license for 3 years and we are alone in the car he can let me drive but if i crash into something he will be the one who take the blame....

Found it, from this thread, http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/745553-does-car-insurance-cover-if-driver-has-no-licence/page-4?hl=%2Blearning+%2B%2B+%2Binsurance#entry8299303, this information:

Thai Traffic Act B.E. 2522

Title 3: Driver's License

Section 42

Anyone who wishes to drive a motor vehicle on public roads must possess an appropriate driver's license. The driver must carry the driver's license and a photocopy of the registration book and show them to competent officers upon request. This does not apply for those who are learning to drive a motor vehicle according to the provision of Section 57.

Section 56

The owner or driver of a motor vehicle must not let anyone without a proper driver's license to drive the vehicle, except under the provisions of Section 57

Section 57

When practicing to drive a motor vehicle, the learner must be under the instruction of a driver who has had the license for that vehicle for at least 3 years.

During the driving lesson, no other person than the learner and the instructor may stay in the vehicle.

The instructor is responsible for any damage or accident during a lesson, unless it is proved that the learner refused to obey his instruction.

Not quite..............The instructor is responsible for any damage or accident during a lesson, unless it is proved that the learner refused to obey his instruction.

So you could be liable for damage and personal injury.

If you haven't got a valid licence then you can't get Insurance.

Driving schools may have another form of Insurance as it's their business.

I'd be amazed if the police could tell the difference between a practising (learner)? driver and any other Thai driver.

Things have changed a bit now-a-days, but we did this: My wife wanted to learn to drive, so went to a learn-to-drive place and booked in for 2 weeks I think. First day a new car, great, then an old car, not so great.

We had just bought a new automatic Toyota , so I said to my wife and driving company 'why not use this, as this is what she'll be driving?'.

I have first class motor car insurance (as you need to being a Farang, and ever run over a Thai national), so went to my insurance guy and asked him about any problems with the wife using our car to learn to drive. The obvious one was that there would be no car insurance while she was driving, so that seemed to squash that idea, but he said 'wait a minuite, why not go and get your wife's licence first and then learn to drive leagally?'

So that's what she did, got the licence and then learnt to drive. In fact she has one of these 'never expire' licences and good for life, where as I have to go every year and it's getting more difficult for me to get those white lines lined up in that crazy machine.

I believe you need a international drivers License.

No you don't. If living here Thai DL is required, if not living home license provided it is in English, valid and has a photo.

Surely it's not just a question of having a licence but having insurance. I can't imagine any insurance company giving a driver cover without a licence. What if the learner driver wrote off a new Mercedes. Who pays the 4 million baht damages?

It surely is and just another Western point of view, Phew !! please read through the thread.

No driving licence nothing imaginary about it, all Thai vehicles have insurance if they have a road disc issued at the same time.

The OP can drive without a driving licence accompanied by a Thai drivers licence holder who has had their licence for more than 3 years.
