Ban is the romanisation of a geographical term just like Talat, Amphoe, Changwat. Personally, I see nothing wrong with using these terms in forms relating to an address, just like in addressing a letter to a person or a company in Thailand you would not write village, market, district, province. Thais are not that lucky; they would not get far addressing letters to any country outside Thailand with a Thai transliterasation of the recipient's address.

Not it is not. Take the example of someone from Laos or another a neighboring country.

They may probably understand the Thai writing even if most of them don't speak English.

If so, I merely put the lack of any English translation underneath in this particular instance down to a case of TIT!

Well its disputable, why they use transcription instead of translation.

E.g. in the case of "Changwat" which would be perfectly OK as "province".

On the other hand, it really does not hurt to learn a little bit about the administrative divisions, their names and responsibilities.

Anyway, do you suppose if a Thai (or German or Russian or Japanese citizen) travels to most other countries he gets all the forms available to him/her in Thai/German/Russian or Japanese?

I know foreigners here for 10 years and can't even say the months of the year, let alone write them..

Bring it on, lets sort out the wheat from the chaff, to be honest about the only thing I write in Thai these days is my name and address, eg the the dentist last week, coupled with the hand drawn maps for immi each year.

I know Thais who cant tell me the months from Jan to Dec, they refer to it as deuan tee hok example for June or mi tu naa (yon).

I also know many Thais who are illiterate in Thai, I also know some Thais who cant speak pasat klang but speak in some obscure Lao/Khmen language.

Guy up the road from me speaks three languages, the first two he learned werent pasat klang, he only learned that at school.

He is from Surin way, his mother speaks one language, his father another, he can go 50 clicks away and no one can understand him unless he speaks pasat klang.

There should be a Thai proficiency test for those yearly extentions.

I can type Thai better than I can write it and very rarely do write.

Are you sure they don't know the month? Maybe they never went to school? My 8 year old kid explained once how they know how many days the month has when I told her about 30 days has September, April June and November.

You all miss the point , if you are going to convert Thai. to English , use English words . Basic Eng. 101 and you all failed . And yes my ex country has forms in many languages but English is the number 1 int'l language .
