Tua Nao Khaaep

Featured Replies

Does anyone know where I can get Tua Nao Khaaep? Its fermented dried soy cakes, produced in the Chiang Mai area only, they look like brown dried tortillas. I live in the south so can not travel to Chiang Mai but would like a website or a store that I can order some from. When I asked my wife she has never seen them before.

I think you'll find them at Worrorot Market, by the river.

Big covered market, all sorts of local produce.

Most the markets have them. Often near Tofu and dried herbs, dried fruits, seasoning sections.

Tanin market has a few vendors in between the fresh vegetable areas and cooked foods

Most of the small markets will have them also. They aren't so perishiable. I have even seen them on those trucks that drive around and sell food supplies to people. It's a basic condiment like palm sugar or chili paste.

If your after the vitamin K-2 benefits then my experience was not that great.

YMMV but the Natto beans - fermented Soy beans -- aka snot beans that can be purchased at Tops/Rimping etc seem to deliver more K 2

Or can make your own Natto at home

or How to make Tua Nao yourself

Or you can just buy the fermented bean paste from the market and dry out your own cakes.

I am pretty sure you can find the soy bean paste in most parts of Thailand.

If your just after Tua Nao for taste then there are different varieties.

Some are more thick and sour and some thinner and crispier which I am guessing relates to the paste that is used and drying method.

Usually 5 or 10 baht for a short stack of them.

They look like this and usually have 2 strings around them and often hanging up in the vendor stall.

Thanks Cobra, I am after the K2 and I eat Natto but when I go to work 4 weeks offshore no K2 available and I cant take Natto as its perishable. I thought this would be a decent supplement. I will try Baan Suan Pak.
