Australian govt to send businessmen to explore Thai market in 2015

BANGKOK, 13 Nov 2014 (NNT) – The Australian government has agreed to forge trade ties with Thailand during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in China.

According to Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn, Australian Minister for Trade & Investment Andrew Robb had expressed interest in the country’s economic situation and also had a plan to lead Australian businessmen to Thailand to discuss mutual trade and investment opportunities.

The Australian Trade & Investment Minister has planned to lead 300 business operators to India, and another 150 to Indonesia in the first half of the year. He will later lead another batch of investors to Thailand to talk about trade possibilities.

Mrs. Apiradee disclosed that trade between Thailand and Australia had doubled since the free trade agreement between the two nations took effect. Thailand is a major exporter of automobiles and agro-products to Australia. The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited meanwhile has been granted a permit to conduct financial transactions in Thailand, thus benefiting business activities of Australian investors here.

She added that both sides agreed the World Trade Organization would play a key role in facilitating trade among member nations, and as a result reducing business costs. Both are hopeful that member nations should come up with resolutions and be ready to negotiate on free trade extension on agro-products.

During January to August this year, Thailand earned USD 5.7 bil in revenue from its exports to Australia, while Australia earned USD 3.8 bil from Thailand. Thai exports to Australia include vehicles, auto parts, rubber and plastic products, agro-products and cosmetics. Imports from Australia include raw petroleum, jewelry, coal, chemical products, steel and dairy products.

Interesting post above, I fear he is 101% true.

Just look at how hard it is to return some money to the account it came from, almost impossible, it is all one way in Thailand,

This is the biggest LOAD OF CRAP (sorry i am getting so frustrated with all these lies!) I was involved with my embassy and the TRADE Commissioner at AUSTRADE within the Embassy and we went to the BOI. In the last 4 months NOT 1 single approval was done for Australia.

"The Australian Trade & Investment Minister has planned to lead 300 business operators to India, and another 150 to Indonesia" THAILAND take serious note. We are your 4th largest trading partner - larger than China! And see that other little country of 290 million? Indonesia? they have huge gas and oil reserves and that is why car companies are going there. BE warned! you do not think we have brains in the west. We have become tired of your charades.

The delegation is going to INDIA not bloody Thailand and maybe some will come here and poke a few girls at Bangkok which is so aptly named. Thailand needs our gas and coal. And we may soon be shifting car imports to Indonesia because they are cheaper so LOOK OUT Thailand! And one of our biggest RUBBER companies importing Thai rubber for latex has just switched to the Malaysian product dumping Thai latex due to the cost which I spoke of in another thread.

Australia signed the very first Free Trade Agreement with Thailand and guess who does not abide by the rules? I know because I try every month to import using and citing the AGREEMENT and hoop la I went through to invoke and get paperwork done. May as well have been Ice in Hell as that is how long it remained solid!

Which Australian car companies are looking to shift from Thailand to Indonesia ?

Australia does not have a car company. They are all American or Japanese and they are all in the process of leaving.

A great taxpayer/shareholder funded tour of 5 star hotels and business class lounges and a few high class hookers paid and the end result will be stuff all. The Australian Government is busy selling real estate and dodgy education places to Chinese and Indians and they think business people will help out.

My humble apologies I meant in my frustration to say "IMPORTS FROM INDONESIA". Toyita closed or is in the process of shutting down in Australia (Melbourne) and moving all plant and equipment to Indonesia as we speak.

Unfortunately we are the mining pit of the world and because the world needs energy we are well poised. If only i owned all that coal and Uranium. We do not sell coal mines to the chinese. they pay heftilly for the mining and we have many restrictions on labour and so forth. probably worse than Thailand but resources are deemed "IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST" so that is mainly the reason why. We do however permit foreign investment up to $1million without much paperwork at all. Unlike here and this is the reason our companies are going elsewhere. Australia is the largest partner in all the mining in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. So yes I guess you are right, with 23million people and a large resources base - you need us we do not need you. (tongue in cheek)

I am sure he is correct. When will our Government get some balls and bring Thailand to account. They get their cars in at 4% tarrif, whilst we get to pay $20 bottle for Jacobs Creek at 7/11 with 250% tarrif? For what to protect their wine industry? Thats a joke, tried drinking their rocket fuel they masquerade as wine? Makes Olive Oil taste like Champagne!

Sorry to slightly correct you but cars have been coming in from Thailand for over 10 years totally TAX FREE not at 4% at all. DIRECT FROM AUSTRADE COMMISSIONER at our humble embassy in bangkok

Well you are incorrect in that NOBODY NEEDS our gas and coal. And to buy elsewhere they are still supporting us as BHP Billiton and RIO TINTO own a major percentage of every other major mining operation too. Except for a few players like Chevron. (Even there there are probably unscrupulous back room deals) To keep prices down THEY DO or they would not buy from our arrogant, self centred, opinionated, fascist, government.

As for Global Warming I am more angry than anyone. My partner in OZ is in resources and the centre of Asutralkia - the Cooper Basin has very good THERMAL energy properties and for a large outlay could powr all of Asia, India and our our little island and be TOTALLY GREEN. But what do we do, mine and ship out everything and contribute a hell of a lot more to global warming than we are credited with. I heard some scientists state that if our exports were taken into account we are nearer 28% of the pollution.

I and many Ozzies are ashamed but big business wins. We are only ever lied to by politicians and I know no other place where they speak the truth. Do you?

And the Government is not very happy as when they tried to export to here they had many many barriers placed. Free Trade is a concept that Thailand needs to come to terms with.

Well at least the BOI had a meeting with you. They did not respond to my investment enquiries at all. Although I have a company in Thailand, based on the lack of response from the BOI, I opened in Singapore instead.

Actually I wrote to the Embassy in frustration as I could not get many things done. They intervened and sponsored the whole shabbang. They took over everything and I was gob smacked to say the least.

I am moving all to Vietnam to keep wages down.

I too have felt the lack of interest in foreign investment here. Actually things have been so difficult, that it has just been too much headache. Therefore, we are also moving our company to another country in 2015. At least there are many other countries nearby, who actually appreciate foreign investment.

From my view, Thailand is digging its own financial grave and this country will soon face huge problems from both lack of foreign investment, failing tourism, the housing bubble and the household debts. I know of many other foreign companies here, who are also looking to move their setup elsewhere.

When your investment and effort is not welcome at all, you simply just get sick of it and look for other places.

Forge trade ties?

Didn't the Australian PM state that his Thai counterpart Prayut would be detained and send back if he dared to set a foot on Australian soil? Maybe that was just one way of promoting and forging 'trade ties' ?

Has anyone asked Australia? This current Thai government just loves to speak on behalf of other countries and thier politicians. I would like to hear it from Australia and not some Thai mouthing off to impress thais saying the world loves Thailand as part of thier happiness propaganda campaign

Chooka I think Australia will not give the junta propaganda any airtime.

They have made it well known their feelings on coup and taking power at the barrel of a gun that's why none of the junta will set foot on Aussie soil.

The French come yesterday and gave them a serve and yes chooka I would like the Aussies to ramp it up and show their BS for what it is.

I think the creators of the AusThai FTA had their heads up each others arse when it came to the details. Maybe it was because it was the first time they had to do a real international agreement with someone.

I said when talking about it years ago it was not in Australia's best interest....and it is not!

Business delegates from Oz will have to come here to Thailand if they so desire, as Thai officials are banned from entering Australia for any reason by the Australian Government.

In fact PM Abbott has been very uncomplimentary towards acting PM Prayuth and his " Government "

In general I agree with you about politicians. Looking to Europe I learned that e.g. Germany take the exit for Nuclear Plants as well as Coal Mining. Of course with the result of higher electricity prices probably. Instead Alternative Energy is promoted, even solar energy!

Britain goes same way with wind energy offshore.

So why not use solar energy in Oz?
