U Place victims' families get another Bt50,000

BANGKOK: -- Relatives of the 14 workers who were victims of the U Place condominium collapse in Pathum Thani province in August last year were given Bt50,000 each in compensation yesterday.

The compensation came as part of the PM's Office's support policy, and permanent-secretary ML Pannada Diskul said the money was handed out as a gesture of friendship.

It also came as a surprise to the relatives, as they did not know they were going to receive this payment.

Thai-Vietnam agreement on cultural ties

BANGKOK: -- For the first time ever, Thailand and Vietnam decided to sign a pact reinforcing cultural ties between the two countries.

As part of Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha's visit to Vietnam this week, Culture Minister Veera Rojpojanarat signed a memorandum of understanding with his counterpart to initiate cultural exchange cooperation. The cooperation will focus on six areas, namely performing arts, fine arts, library and archiving, cultural heritage, anthropology and films.

The MoU comes ahead of the set?ting up of the Asean Economic Community in 2015 and marking the 40 years of Thai-Vietnam diplomatic ties in 2016, Veera said.

Experts call for action to protect locals near Phichit gold mine

Thailand to establish special economic zone with Laos PDR

BANGKOK, 28 November 2014 (NNT) – Thai Commerce Minister discussed with Laos Ambassador to Thailand on aims to strengthen relations in various aspects.

The Minister of Commerce, Gen Chatchai Sarikalya, has revealed that he has met with Laos Ambassador to Thailand, Ly Bounkham, and discussed on various subjects.

According to the Commerce Minister, Thailand has put priority on border-area trades. The Thai government has planned to establish a special economic zone along the Thai-Laos border with a pilot area in Mukdahan province, which is at the opposite side of the Savannakhet city of Laos.

The Commerce Minister has stated that Thailand and Loas must grow together as partners. Thailand is now considering the upgrade of transportation that will facilitate trade between Thailand, Laos and China. The project is expected to start construction in 2016.

He has also added that Thailand has proposed activities that would encourage cooperation between the five countries under the GMS framework, which includes Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Southern China.

The activities will require further planning and discussions. For this matter, Thailand might start the discussion with Laos then further extend to other countries.

The Ministry of Commerce of Thailand and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Laos PDR have had five cooperation conferences in the past, of which Thailand will be the host of the sixth conference early next year.
