Poll: Peace, lower cost of living, higher agro-product prices top Thais’ wish list

BANGKOK, 30 Nov 2014 (NNT) – A recent opinion survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University has found that peace and order, as well as a lower cost of living were the most-wanted New Year gifts they expected from the government.

The survey, conducted between November 24 and 29, asked 1,417 people throughout the country what they hoped the government and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to do for them in political, economic and social aspects.

In terms of politics, as much as 86 percent wish to see peace, and an end to any political gatherings caused by conflicts. Other wishes include the arrival of quality and devoted politicians, a democratic practice allowing public participation, a transparent political reform, and elimination of corrupt politicians.

On the subject of economy, as high as 87 percent want the government and the NCPO to help control the cost of living and improve agro-product prices most. Other expectations are economic recovery and stability, trade competitiveness, higher incomes, and cheaper power prices.

As for social aspects, social order, elimination of crime and drug problems are what they want most with 73 percent, followed by harmony among Thai people, enhancement of family institution and convenient public transportation.

"... peace and order, as well as a lower cost of living were the most-wanted New Year gifts they expected from the government."

And I wish that the river near my house begins flowing with '61 Petrus. I am confident that the government has equal ability to make both happen...Or should that read inability?

How is one expected to get higher prices AND a lower cost of living?

As for Peace.... dream on. Thaksin is sitting in the dunes dreaming of how he is going to proceed once he 'thinks' the time is right.

Just curious, do any of the police in the recent scandal have any ties to Thaksin?

Poll: Peace, lower cost of living, higher agro-product prices top Thais wish list

"Thais want their cake and to eat it.."

Who put together this ridiculous question.

Absolutely laugable wish list.

If the respondents didn't have the greedy, volcanic and non-compromising traits that they are known to have, then their "wish list" might have half a chance of coming true.........................

And how many are willing to stand up for what they want by voting with their brain instead of their wallet or reporting corruption, or refusing to pay bribes, or making sacrifices for the good of the country. As Thai-at-heart said, Thais want their cake and eat it too. Freedom, democracy and prosperity come at a price that few in this land are willing to pay.

How about this. The junta bumps up taxes for the richest 5 or 10% of the population, and uses this money to subsidise diesel and petrol ? What percentage of the population wants this ? This is going to slightly reduce the cost of living right ?

And also. Target land, (government land, public land, land removed from big land-owners due to land reform rules, call it what you want) and allocate it to those who haven't got land. Let them pay a rent that is below the market price, and they'ill be allowed to buy it after a few years, again, at a price below the market price. How many people are going to protest against this, how many are going to want it ??

The rich certainly won't protest, because as soon as the poor get the land title they will sell it to them as has happened so may times before. There is no point giving people land (or selling it cheaply to them) if they can't make a decent living from it.

"elimination of corrupt politicians."

Stop voting for them, then.

Fair enough. At least they could be voted out of office though.

If they'd focused on more governing the country in a logical, economically feasible, inclusive, legitimate fashion and less on giving thaksin his amnesty they most likely would have succeeded in staying in office. Edited by Bluespunk

Yea and with laws preventing foreigners from owning it the rich Thai again have a monopoly on everything in Thailand.

"an end to any political gatherings caused by conflicts" ... but ... "a democratic practice allowing public participation"

These are "cause" and "effect" events that are mutually interdependent. How is this duplicitious wish done ... public participation by email and it goes directly to NCPO's spam mail box?

An open democratic process is by its very nature public participation in support of conflicting political ideologies. In one-party systems such as communism there is an absence of political gatherings (except when orchestrated by the Party to show how democractic its society is) because there is an absence of opposition while allowing public elections, albeit to a list of party-selected candidates.

Look at rice: See what the farmer get really paid per kg and see what the rice costs in the supermarket.

You can compare that figures with wheat in Europe or USA. The middlemen, mills and supermarkets are getting a huge profit.
