CHIANG MAII: -- Thailand's two top mountain peak destinations, Doi Inthanon in Chomthong district and Doi Angkhang in Fang district of Chiang Mai were overcrowded with tourists at the weekend to experience the cold temperatures.

Although several thousands of tourists visiting the Doi Inthanon mountain peak with high hope of seeing the “flower frost” yesterday would be disappointed as the phenomenon did not happen due to increasing temperatures at the weekend, the Meteorological Department forecast sharp drop in mercury from this coming weekend.

It said strong high pressure system will move down from China to blanket the North during November 1-6, thus the temperature is expected to fall sharply 4-6 degrees Celsius.

And there was possibility of flower frost phenomenon this coming weekend.

The temperature at Doi Inthanon yesterday was measured at 6 degrees Celsius.

Chief of the Doi Inthanon national park Mr Pornthep Charoensuebsakul said traffic on the Doi Inthanon peak was jammed yesterday with thousands coming on top to watch the flower frost.

But due to warmer temperature, the phenomenon did not happen.

However park official expected the phenomenon could happen this weekend due to the expected sharp fall in temperatures.

Meanwhile tourists flocking to Doi Angkhang were fortunate when flower frost happened at the orchard at the Angkhang station of the Royal Project Foundation both on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Weatherman measured the temperature at the Angkhang station at 3 degrees Celsius Sunday morning while the grass minimum temperature on the mountaintop of the station was recorded at minus 0.5 degree.

Tourists were excited to experience the vast sea of flower frost at the station which happened Saturday and Sunday.

But the dropping temperature and further drop this weekend prompted authorities to declare Omkoi, Mae Chaem, Kalyaniwatana, Wieng Haeng and Fang districts of Chiang Mai as cold-stricken areas where assistance will be given immediately.

The vast majority of tourists in Thailand are not westerners but Asians from neighboring countries and even the people who drive and fly up from Bangkok are still counted as tourists.
